AAMU Wins Black College Quiz Bowl

Huntsville, Ala. ---- A team of Alabama A&M University Honors Program students has won the 2007 Black College Quiz Bowl in Chicago.

AAMU was invited to join seven other historically black universities to compete in a test of wits and knowledge recently at the Hyatt Regency. Sponsored by State Farm and McDonald’s, and coordinated by Central City Productions, the Black College Quiz Bowl will air in February.

The wining team members included Allison Arp, Retonya Dunning, James Eubanks, Andrew Scott and Stephanie Lauren Farr (team captain), all selected and coached by Carla Draper Holloway, interim director of the AAMU Honors Program.

All teams were flown to Chicago for competitions that began December 1 at the Harold Washington Cultural Theatre. The AAMU Bulldogs played the Aggies of North Carolina A&T University in their first competition and trailed by more than 100 points. However, the Bulldogs growled to a 300-175 final score, following a few correct answers on big-point questions. This marked the first time that AAMU advanced past the first round in this one-of-a-kind competition, recalled Holloway.

Even the Howard University Bisons, who advanced by slamming Morehouse College, were no match for the Bulldogs in the second round.

The final score was 350–75, boosting the Bulldogs to the finals! In the finals, the Bulldogs faced Prairie View A&M University, a team that had defeated Fayetteville State and Hampton in previous rounds.

Holloway says the finals were intense, and the Bulldogs did trail the Panthers in the first half. Yet, as had become their routine, the Bulldogs came from behind “with a vengeance” and a score of 400–250! The final question came with an opportunity to wager. The Panthers laid it all on the line gambling 250 points, but answered incorrectly. The Bulldogs responded accurately wagering 101 points.

“The day-long competition ended with a big bang,” exclaimed team coach Holloway, “and our mighty Bulldogs annihilated the Prairie View A&M Panthers with a score of 501–0, winning the Black College Quiz Bowl for the first time!”

The Black College Quiz Bowl is coordinated by Central City Productions (CCP). For over 30 years, CCP has specialized in the production, syndication, distribution and advertising sales of black entertainment programs, such as The Stellar Gospel Music Awards, the Minority Business Report, and the Soul Train Music Awards, just to mention a few. It has produced over 1,000 shows for television and is recognized as a giant in the industry for launching the first-ever Black Nielsen Household Ratings Survey from which all black television shows are measured today by the advertising industry.
