Posted By: Ebony Tillman on December 13, 2007 CHICAGO- As a major political figure in Chicago, Tillman carried on the tradition of Dr. King with several community-building activities, including the creation of the Harold Washington Cultural Center and the Chicago Blues District. This effort has led to the revitalization of the Grand Boulevard/ Bronzeville neighborhood. Today, her commitment continues with projects related to issues of waning inner-city education, housing and family needs, preserving Black culture and civil rights. Tillman has now embarked a new facet of life - author. Her highly anticipated book “Hang Onto Your Hats” is a pictorial journey through the life of Dorothy Wright Tillman - one hat at a time. The book is published by Tillman’s company, DJT Publishing, In this exciting new book, you will encounter a fascinating journey through current history, and find her walking with Kings, international leaders and heads of state, as well as with seniors, children and everyday people throughout the United States and abroad. Join us for the book signing, which will take place at the Harold Washington Cultural Center, 4701 South King Drive, on Sunday December 16, 2007 at 5:00 p.m. There will be live entertainment, food, and surprise celebrity appearances. This event will also serve as a fundraiser for the Harold Washington Cultural Center and its educational programs. She has received hundreds of awards and recognition for her local, national and global activism and has been featured in various books and television features, including BBC and the History Channel. Currently, Tillman hosts “Coffee, Tea & a Conversation with Dorothy Wright Tillman”, an exciting new Saturday morning talk show on the legendary Black Chicago radio station WVON-1690 AM. The Harold Washington Cultural Center houses a state-of-art media center designed for educating youth. Its technical equipment mirrors that of many radio and television studios including HARPO Studio. High School students gain a wealth of knowledge through internships provided by the HWCC. In 2007, over 3500 youth took advantage of the HWCC learning experience. Community organizations and churches enjoy the cultural and religious programs featured at the HWCC.
