The Legacy of Slavery
|
Posted By: Tessie Belue on January 01, 2008 On November 13, 2007, I presented a workshop entitled, "We All have had Unclean Hands," at The National Afro-American Museum in Wilberforce, Ohio. I read from the draft of my book, "Cry of the Whippoorwill." A small group of about 10 sat in the hugh museum space. We spent 1 1/2 hours exploring the effects of slavery upon the characters in the book. We brok into small groups and considered how menbers would handle this scenario: How would they handle slavery, if they found themsleves kidnapped and forced into belonging to the losing faction. Most believed that they would work together and escape. The topic of "Cry of the Whippoorwill," is how Africans and Cherokees in America during the 1830's confronted their capture and enslavement by Europeans. The most volatile aspect of the workshop was after the showing of the fil, "Black Indians." During the post-film discussion, I was surprised at the ignorance about the relationshjips between Blacks and Native-Americans among African-American College Students. How do we bridge the generational gap between those of us that lived during the Jim Crow, Civil Rights and Post-Civil Rights Affirmative Era and the resurgence of racism today? The Jenna 6 examples shows how much of a trigger the symbols of racism affect us today. Recently, a picture of a noose appeared under the door of a Dennison University African-American student. These signs are not coincidental buat are signs of a disease: Denial. Until we learn to converse and cease using whites as our scapegoat, will our nation be able to controng our ethnic intolerance and how it continues to rear its ugly head, we will see it again.
