Wal-Mart Donates $1 Million for HBCU Scholarship

Wal-Mart Donates $1 Million for HBCU Scholarship
Posted By: Jon C. on January 03, 2008

Wal-Mart teamed up with the Thurgood Marshall Scholarship Fund (TMSF) for their annual celebrity fashion show and gala in New York City. Wal-Mart’s Metro 7 and Exsto clothing lines were featured in the fashion show, along with top fashion designers B. Michael, Kara Saun, Sean Jean and more. The event was hosted by music mogul Andre Harrell and featured “America’s Next Top Model” winner, Danielle Evans, on the runway. Fashion model and icon, Iman, was honored by the organization for her contributions to the fashion world.

The Thurgood Marshall Scholarship Fund wrapped up the extended weekend of festivities with their annual scholarship gala. At the gala, Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. announced a $1 Million gift to the Thurgood Marshall Scholarship Fund that will support their initiative for merit scholars attending historically black colleges and universities.

“Consistent with the philosophy of the Thurgood Marshall Scholarship Fund, Wal-Mart knows and understands that there is no greater investment that we can make as a national organization, than to ensure that the next generation of young men and women are well-educated and well-prepared to lead America into the future,” said Dr. N. Joyce Payne, TMSF founder.

The Thurgood Marshall Scholarship Fund was established in 1987 to carry on Justice Marshall's legacy of equal access to higher education by supporting exceptional merit scholars attending America's Public Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs).

To date, the Thurgood Marshall Scholarship Fund has awarded more than $50 million in scholarships, capacity building and programmatic support. More than 5000 Thurgood Marshall Scholars have graduated and are making valuable contributions to science, technology, government, human service, business, education and various communities thanks to the support they received from TMSF. Alumni of TMSF member schools include: civil rights leader Rev. Jesse Jackson; the late CBS News 60 Minutes Correspondent, Ed Bradley; NFL Hall of Famer Walter Payton; actress Lynn Whitfield; opera star Jessye Norman; and astronaut Ronald McNair.
