North Carolina Central University freshman Brian Demby and Johnson C. Smith University's Andre Kelly have been selected as two of four student-athletes to receive a scholarship during the opening ceremony of the 19th National Minority College Golf Championship on May 5 at the PGA Historical Center in Port St. Lucie, Florida.
A criminal justice major at NCCU and native of Cary, NC, Demby will be presented with a $2,500 National Minority College Golf Scholarship Fund grant from representatives of State Farm Insurance Company.

Demby, NCCU's No. 1-ranked golfer with an average round of 76.2, captured low medalist honors during the 2005 CIAA Golf Championship on April 21-22 with a conference-record score of 135 over the two-day event. The rookie shot a four-under-par 67 on day 1, and then followed with a three-under-par 68 on day 2.

Demby was also the low medalist and Most Valuable Player of the 2005 CIAA Eastern Division Golf Challenge in Elizabeth City, NC, on April 12.

The three other scholarship recipients are: Morehouse College freshman Edward Hills III of Aurora, Ohio and South Carolina State University sophomore Kellen Miller of Mocksville, NC.

"State Farm Insurance is pleased with its relationship with both The PGA of America and the National Minority College Golf Championship and is proud to be a part of the first class event, as golf teaches several of life's lessons, such as perseverance, integrity and honesty," said John Rosenstock, State Farm's director of community alliances. "The Championship helps student athletes attain a college education, which is very important to State Farm Insurance."
The opening ceremony will also feature an outdoor procession of approximately 100 of the top student-athletes and coaches from 21 colleges and universities, representing 11 countries. The PGA of America's Chief Executive Officer Jim Awtrey and Port St. Lucie Sheriff Ken Mascara will be on hand to welcome the participants.
The 19th National Minority College Golf Championship will be conducted Friday, May 6 through Sunday, May 8, at PGA Golf Club in Port St. Lucie.

State Farm Insurance and The Golf Channel have combined to produce a Championship highlight program, which will air June 9, at 6 p.m. EDT.
