Germany Bound! A&M Choir’s Fundraising Shifts to High Gear
|
Posted By: Jehan Bunch on January 23, 2008 Huntsville, Ala. ---- Alabama A&M University Choir Director Horace W. Carney is a man on a mission. When he is not busy preparing his world-famous choir for one of its several appearances around the region, teaching music courses, or shouldering departmental responsibilities, Carney is busy trying to raise funds to send the talented choir to Germany in May 2008. The AAMU Choir will become the first choir from a historically black university to participate in the more than week-long American Choral Festival in Leipzig, Germany, beginning May 15. “Our choir will perform a variety of classical, spiritual and German pieces at the Festival,” says Dr. Carney. “We will also perform combined numbers with other choirs from throughout the United States.” Carney says more than 50 members of the choir will travel to Germany to take part in an annual event that aims to provide goodwill, good music, shared performances and culture. However, with only 20 percent of the $150,000 needed to make the trip actually raised to date, Carney and a team of volunteers are becoming more anxious and more aggressive. “We need 1,000 people to give $150,” says Carney, “and the trip will be a done deal.” Volunteers also have held fundraisers, and some long community-oriented businesses, like Outback, for instance, have already shown their support. Persons, organizations and alumni who would like to contribute to the AAMU Choir’s trip to Germany can make checks payable to the AAMU Foundation – Acct. 486, P. O. Box 1057, Normal, AL 35762, or call (256) 372-8411. To contact Dr. Carney, call (256) 372-5512. If you enjoyed this article, Join HBCU CONNECT today for similar content and opportunities via email! |
