ELECTION WATCH 08: Is Obama the New JFK?
|
Posted By: M Smith on January 28, 2008 It was like a rock concert, rather than a political rally, at American University on Monday when political powerhouses Ted, Patrick and Caroline Kennedy, John F. Kennedy’s daughter, joined Sen. Barack Obama on stage to announce their endorsement of him for president. Hundreds of 20-somethings on up to 60-somethings lined up outside of AU’s Bender Arena to hear the endorsement live – one student said he started camping out at 6 a.m. in order to secure his seat. I wasn’t so lucky. I watched the rally from the overflow room, but even there the excitement for Barack Obama – the excitement that Caroline Kennedy spoke of in her speech – was still very apparent. Cheers and roars from the crowd erupted when Rep. Patrick Kennedy first took to the stage. An even louder encore of applause for Sen. Ted Kennedy when he took to the stage, especially when he said that Obama had the power to make America good again. “I feel a change in the air,” said Sen. Kennedy, as he proceeded to shut down Hillary Clinton’s claim that Obama didn’t have enough experience to be president. He said that Harry Truman told JFK the same thing, to which the young presidential hopeful replied, “The world is changing. The old ways will not do” – what a blow to “Billary”! Caroline Kennedy said her three children inspired her to support Obama. She also said Obama kind of reminds her of her dad, JFK. “Fortunately there is one candidate who offers that same sense of hope and inspiration,” she said to the roaring crowd of Obama-Kennedy fans. So now that you know what the Kennedys think, what do you think -- Is Obama the JFK of today?
