ELECTION WATCH 08: Obama’s Speech ‘Just Words’?

'We have nothing to fear but fear itself' - just words? – Sen. Barack Obama This past Saturday, Sen. Barack Obama delivered a powerful speech to a group of Milwaukee democrats. So what’s the problem? It was just like a speech his friend, Gov. Deval Patrick (D-MA) gave two years ago – and Hillary Clinton busted him out on it. "'We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal' - just words? 'Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country.' Just words? 'I have a dream' - just words?" – Gov. Deval Patrick But here’s the catch: Patrick came out in Obama’s defense and said that he gave the presidential candidate permission to use his speech. In one fell swoop, or… um “speech” in this case, he put out the fire that Clinton’s unraveling political camp was so desperately trying to fan. What’s more, Obama, who has the same political advisor as Patrick, admitted that he borrowed parts of the speech and said, in retrospect, that he should have attributed it to the Massachusetts governor. While some people may look at this as a negative blow to Obama’s campaign, I really see it as a non-issue. Politicians are always quoting famous speeches, and the fact that Patrick came out in support of Obama makes this controversy a moot point. In fact, Clinton’s whistle blowing of Obama’s ‘Just Words’ speech may mean that his background is so clean, that she HAD to resort to researching his speeches in order to get him on something. But what do you think? Is the Clinton camp reaching in their accusations of plagiarism of Obama’s speech or is this a major blow to Obama’s campaign?
