FBK--The Truth Hurts BLACK WILD WILD WEST (Young Black men--Media Templates?)

Posted By: FBK Kidd on March 13, 2008 Wow. Turn on the news or open the newspaper and you would think America was the Young, Black Wild Wild West. Everyday there’s a shooting. Every single day. Young Black Males are becoming extinct. As an African-American mother-- I’m embarrassed, afraid, and often too humiliated to turn on the news. Especially since I know someone who participated in a Young and Reckless - Black Wild Wild West story. This person, who I LOVE dearly, has since been sent to prison. I think the newspaper and other Media outlets use a standard template, something similar to this __________, black male, 19, was arrested____(date/time location)__ for using a gun to___________ (rob, kill…). Seriously, have young, black men’s lives been reduced to templates? If young black men’s lives have been reduced to Media templates. White men’s have been lifted to Idol status. Every white man I know looks “Perfect” like Presidential candidate John McCain. Just perfect. Combed over hair. Leather worn face. And they’ve lived the “good” life. What exactly is the white man’s crime? Yes the media reports the white man’s crime. However, the media hasn’t exactly reduced them to templates _______________, white male, 89, was arrested but not CHARGED ________(date/time/location) for ________________(prostitution, perjury, money laundering, priest molestations, murder “aka” Mr. Peterson 1 & 2). Gov. Eliot Spitzer. Former President Bill Clinton. Senator Jim McGreevy, United States House Representative Mark Foley, Senator Larry Craig. OK so here’s what I REALLY THINK. Black parents and the Black community need to Parent with a Purpose. Most blacks parents that I know parent with a purpose and a back hand if needed. Most. We must hold them accountable for their illegal actions. If we don’t the legal system will. We need to continue to show compassion for our young black men. If we don’t, who will? We need to work with teachers, preachers, other parents, positive programs, politicians, to help them begin a journey of a purpose-filled life. If they’re not already on a positive journey. We need to stop pointing one finger at everybody else, when three fingers are pointed back at us. Nobody’s perfect. Nobody has the right to judge another person. We all do it. Well, some of us do. We must stop judging and start helping. Black boys who think they are men are going to prison everyday. They are also being wheeled the morgue.
