Platonic Relationships: Can Men and Women Just Be Friends?

Platonic Relationships: Can Men and Women Just Be Friends?
Posted By: Terence Hendrix on May 15, 2008

That question always seems to come up when talking about relationships. Usually around the time when the girlfriend is questioning that female friend of her man, or when the boyfriend is having problems with his girl and she keeps confiding in that same longtime male friend.

Some would argue that it is impossible for a man and a woman to be just platonic friends. That the whole nature of the situation is false from the start. Somewhere in there, one person or both people are attracted to each other and they either are not admitting it or just haven't figured it out yet. Or they figured out they indeed truly like each other and at one time did hook up for either a secret encounter or a trial marriage.

The flip side of it can be argued that what might have initially started off as a sexual attraction may have transcended beyond that to a true friendship. Or that during the course of the "getting to know you phase" some undesirable characteristics came up that precluded the person from becoming a lover and landed them in the "friend zone."

In either situation or countless ones untold, it always ends up with the same scenario: He/She questions the long term relationship of the "Friend." Is it truly just friendship, or is this person a potential contender for the throne?

I say that it is possible, and that it is usually a combination of both sides of the argument.

The real question is are people mature enough to accept the end of a previous relationship and the movement of a possible previous lover to the friend category? I believe that relationships are broken down into 5 categories which can be seen as concentric circles:

1. Family
2. Friends
3. Associates
4. Acquaintances
5. Some Random Ass Folks

These circles overlap at times where you have a blending of the various circles. During the course of our lives, the people we know move between these zones depending upon their behavior and circumstances. I have had women who were at one time in the Random Ass Folk category move through all of the zones and become considered Family. Not all were "known" in a biblical sense and I am told that this is very rare. However, I say this to show that it IS possible.
