JCSU mourns passing of Claude Saunders

Posted By: Reginald Culpepper on June 16, 2008 The JCSU family is saddened to learn of the passing of Claude Saunders. Saunders graduated from JCSU in 1955 and was the first All-CIAA basketball player at JCSU. Saunders was a retired CIAA official and was inducted into the CIAA Officials Hall of Fame in 2000. He still worked as a neutral official for the CIAA and served as the clock operator for the NFL's Carolina Panthers. He died June 1, 2008 at the age of 74. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 7, 2008 at 4:00 p.m. at Memorial Presbyterian Church, 2600 Beatties Ford Road, Charlotte, NC in memory of Mr. Claude E. Saunders. The family will receive friends on Friday, June 6, 2008 at 7:30 p.m. at the home of James and Julia Saunders, 4323 La Brea Drive in Hyde Park, Charlotte, NC. In lieu of flowers, memorial may be made to Memorial Presbyterian Church Building Fund, 2600 Beatties Ford Road, Charlotte, NC 28216, in memory of Mr. Claude E. Saunders. Or memorials may be sent to the athletic department of Johnson C. Smith University, in memory of Mr. Claude E. Saunders. Costner Funeral Home in Gastonia, NC is serving the family.
