Black Colleges in the UK

Posted By: David McQueen on June 17, 2008 Our history is somewhat different here in the UK but I wonder what would happen with the aspirations of many of our youth if we had a historical black college here. The equivalent of a Howard, Spelman, Morehouse, etc in the UK I believe would raise the standard of attainment and life chances something huge. Maybe there is someway something on a small scale that could be started here. I am intrigued by the experiences of alumni or current college students in the US. That's an interesting premise. I know that the situation educating urban Black children in the UK is similar to that here in the US, and we could probably learn much from each other's experiences. The situation that created American HBCUs is somewhat unique because as opposed to Great Britain, many American institutions were legally segregated until the 1960s. However, there are some lessons that have been learned and there are some successful British programs at the high school level modeled after HBCUs. Hey Jonathan Thanks for your comments. I know Tony and as with other prominent educationalists such as Gus John, Ray Lewis and William Atkinson. The thing is all the programmes attributed to these gentlemen are local and need to be replicated elsewhere. Unlike the US we neither have the infrastructure or critical mass (or havent recognised yet) within our black community to create something sustainable. Tuesday, June 17th 2008 at 5:28PM |
