Greek Life: Upholding Its Responsibilities
|
Posted By: Ezra Johnson on July 13, 2008 Wilberforce University has been an institution hailed for its phenomenal historic value. Since its founding in 1856 it has contributed so much to the roots and heritage of Historically Black Colleges and University’s. Wilberforce is a university that has been dedicated to the mission of HBCU's by promoting achievement through the unity of its students. At the pulse of this mission is its Greek life on campus. Greek life on college campuses across the US provide an avenue to build a since of brother and sisterhood amongst its students. Wilberforce University has been home to all nine Greek fraternities and sororities in the Divine Nine, six of them being single-letter chapters. The fraternities on the yard include: Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc, Xi chapter; Kappa Alphas Psi Fraternity Inc, delta chapter; Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc, Upsilon chapter; Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Inc, Alpha Alpha chapter; and Iota Phi Theta Fraternity Inc. In the 2007-2008 school year the fraternities have assisted the aims and purposes of this university educationally, spiritually, and socially. With such events as “sleep out with the homeless” initiated by the men of Phi Beta Sigma and “Home of the hymns” by the men of Alpha Phi Alpha, students are able to participate in community service activities. The men of Kappa Alpha Psi hosted an open mic poetry session where students gathered to appreciate and share the artistic talents of their peers. The sororities have contributed their part to the enrichment of college life with such events as “The canned food collection for the needy” as well as “Voter Awareness” put on by the woman of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Inc. The sororities on the yard include; Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Inc, Kappa chapter, The Lady’s of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Inc, Gamma Epsilon chapter. The Devastating Diva’s of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc, Beta chapter, which celebrated there 95th anniversary last school year. And also the woman of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc, Zeta chapter which is expected to return to the yard this fall of 2008. “The fraternity and sorority is more than the singing of hymns and wearing of letters, it is the collective realization that the unit is stronger than the individual, but the achievements of the individual greatly enhance the unit.” Lawrence C. Ross Jr. “The Devine Nine”. The Devine Nine has become an institution created to promote mentorship, scholarship, and community service through organized unity. At Wilberforce University, and college campuses throughout the country students are led by example, the Greeks have chosen to be the catalysts that help Quiet the storm of under achievement in the black community. To all my fellow Greeks, do you think that fraternities and sororities in this day and age are still up holding the original purpose of the Divine Nine? Are the young members of these varies organization carrying the torch as you did during your undergraduate days? If not, how do we get back to the way things use to be?
