AFRICAN AMERICANS AND GLOBAL WARMING

AFRICAN AMERICANS AND GLOBAL WARMING
Posted By: NIA ROBINSON on July 29, 2008

Hello All, my name is Nia Robinson and I am the director of the Environmental Justice and Climate Change Initiative based in Oakland, CA. Recenntly I co-authored a report on the dispropotionate impacts of climate change on our communities and I am posting the link below.

The report can be found at this link: http://www.ejcc.org/climateofchange.pdf.pd...

A Climate of Change: African Americans, Global Warming, and a Just Climate Policy for the U.S. The analysis contained within this new report delves into the ideas that 1. Climate change is a human rights issue, 2. African Americans pay a heavy price and a disproportionate share of the cost of wars and oil, and 3. Polluters responsible for causing the problem must pay; thus, our new report suggests that our futures are tied up not only with the planet's changing temperatures, increasing rain and droughts, severe weather, food insecurity and energy price spikes, but more importantly that just climate and energy policies from/for us (specifically African Americans) would be just climate policy for all.

As you can imagine, different approaches to reducing greenhouse gas emissions have very different impacts on African Americans and on the U.S. economy, A Climate of Change lays the ground work for making policy that will ensure a healthy, stable and secure future for all.

As the climate changes so must we change the way we do business, from heating our homes to stopping war profiteering corporations from continuing to stall our government in taking the lead in reducing emissions world-wide. The business of climate justice as common justice is ours to share; it is our responsibility to future generations. We must build broad coalitions of people and organizations poised, informed and ready to call for the kind of policy that stops cooking the plant while protecting and empowering vulnerable individuals and communities.

Furthermore, dialogue about energy and climate can no longer exclude the communities most affected. If we continue on that path, mainstream "enviros" and/or fossil fuel industry executives will continue to put our planet and our communities at risk.

We welcome both hard data to challenge our findings as well as personal stories supporting the findings contained within the report. If you agree or even remotely believe in the future of the planet being dependent on real and lasting change in the way we use energy in this country, then join us at the table to discuss moving forward with just climate policy in the U.S. If you are interested in working with EJCC to change the political climate on energy and climate please email us at info@ejcc.org or call us directly at (510) 444-3041.
