A short note on Buddhist peace and meditation
|
Posted By: Lama Choyin Rangdrol on July 30, 2008 A member asked this question: "I essentially would like to hear about the benefits of Buddhism. I have a concept of this religion as one of deep meditation and acceptance and submission to the way things are - and a way to breath life into making change."--- My brief answer: Most human beings meditate in one-way or another. Meditating has nothing to do with any particular religion. Daydreaming is a form of meditation and so on. Buddhist meditation is unique because it is the process of getting to know your own mind beyond doctrines, ideologies, and mental habits. Our goal is to free ourselves from our doctrine while learning to accept the sacredness of all other doctrines and beliefs. We do this to keep Buddhism from becoming dogma or a religion of judging and condemning others. Buddhists are like anyone else. Sometimes we get agitated, upset, or feel that Buddhism is a useless exercise in navel watching. We cannot praise Buddha or give our troubles up to him because he was just a human being, not a god. Our only choice is to calm down by any means necessary, which is why we meditate, do breathing exercises and pray to be more accepting, loving, compassionate, and respectful towards others. When we submit to things just as they are our sense of arguing, posturing, blaming, disputing, anger, frustration, and feeling the need to prove this or that comes to a peaceful end. We as well as those close to us can relax into a harmonious relationship. This why Buddhist environments all over the world are known for their peace. When I was in Cambodia the people were very welcoming and kind to me even though they had been through the Killing Fields experience and I was from a country that dropped over 2 million tons of bombs on them. This is Buddhist peace. It is also why people in poor Buddhist countries have less violence, less crime, less drugs, and less anger than we do in our urban neighborhoods.
