Love's Eulogy

Love
Posted By: Christie Mack on July 30, 2008

I welcome you to the celebration of the life and death of love. In contemplation of the right words to deliver that would give justice to an emotion that touched so many. I remain speechless.

My head begins to ache as thoughts of past failed loves dance through my after thoughts and I commence to remember the innocence I have lost. Love was the definition of what made me who I am. It didn’t pretend to understand my stance it was my stance. Love empathized with me in a time when no one would share my pain. It did not boast of how great it was and how I was nothing without it. Love was stronger than pride. It was patient with me and my imperfections. Love was not easily provoked and did not become envious when I chose to share its gift with the world. Love did not take pleasure in injustice but relished in the glory of truth. When I bore my soul and became translucent in vulnerability, love stood there naked with me and applauded my valor. Love weathered every storm with me and never failed to catch my fall. Faith and hope are great companions, but love was the fairest of them all.

I believe there came a point in time where relationships no longer held value. The four letter word that was placed in such high esteem became trite and meaningless. People forgot how to love without stipulations and safety nets. We soon began to take each other for granted and no longer put in bids for the hopes of tomorrow. We cheated ourselves out of happiness and robbed others of theirs. We held on to hearts after we had long since walked away from the host, leaving barren vessels incapable of much else. We killed love. Not being able to see past our own reflections on dimly lit glass, we willing sold our souls for superficial compensation. We pretended not to care as love gave us its all, we held back.

Instead of embracing love, we took its truths and twisted them into intricate images of deception. We shielded our ears from those who cried to us for relation. We closed our eyes to pale faces and broken soul windows. We dodged tears like large rain drops from fear of becoming “infected”. Love began to dissipate and soon became no more.

You said you loved me, yet you don’t see me standing here in front of you giving you my all. You leave me to search for affection in the arms of someone more willing to provide. You walk away trailing behind you dusty fragments of broken promises and empty terms of endearment. Useless gestures cannot keep a heart beating or provide rest to a weary soul. Step out of your comfort zone and express within yourself a tangible emotion that can be recognized and appreciated. Stop taking so much from others while giving nothing of you. Do not utilize my assets and bleed me dry only to accuse me of having no contribution to the person you have become. My emotional sacrifices were not vain attempts to gain your adoration, but examples of the purifying powers of love in its rarest form. I’m done trying to paint you a masterpiece that seemingly will always remain unfinished because you could never be pleased. I’m tired of my best never being good enough and constantly being led to feel inadequate when cast against your shadow. Love should have been enough.

Despite what any of us may have gone through in the past, love has always been there. We just stopped believing. Ignoring the existence of love until there was nothing left to taint. I take this moment of silence to pay my respect to an emotion that has done so much for me. Through relentless aches I was caused to reminisce. And acknowledge the boldness of the surrender.

Love, you are gone but never forgotten.
