Tuskegee Wins SIAC Tennis Titles

Tuskegee Wins SIAC Tennis Titles
Posted By: Avia Washington on May 31, 2005

Tuskegee University, Alabama (April 18, 2005) – It occurred a short distance from the banks of the Flint River on the campus of Albany State University, April, 15-16, 2005. The Tuskegee men’s and women’s tennis teams captured both conference titles, holding each opponent scoreless.

“It was a historical display of tennis performance by the teams,” stated Head Coach Gregory Green.

The Tuskegee men’s team, defending SIAC champions, received a bye in the first round, defeated Benedict 6-0 in the semifinals and Morehouse 5-0 in the championship match.

Tuskegee took the three double matches from Morehouse 3-0, and Melik Noui and Eric Palmer ended their single matches early, yielding the 2005 SIAC crown to the Golden Tigers. The Tuskegee doubles teams were Andre Moore/Eric Palmer, Melik Noui/Mychal DeFreitas-Pollonais and Charles Harris/Arvinda Maharaj.

At the conclusion of the men’s match, the Tuskegee women’s tennis team won their crown by defeating Fort Valley State 5-0 in the semifinals and Albany State 5-0 in the championship match. Tuskegee won the doubles 3-0 and Jill Person and Sherell Carey sealed the title in the singles. Jill Person/Ebony Palmer, Ayana Heard/Sherell Carey and Kamila Triche/Charlotte Pulliam teamed to win the double matches for Tuskegee.

.

This is the first time since 1979 that two Tuskegee athletic teams have won both men’s and women’s conference championships in the same sport and year.

The women’s team last won the SIAC title in 2001 and the men captured the title in 2004.

“Our next goal is to elevate our program to a higher national status,” said Green, who was named the tournament’s most outstanding coach for men and women. He was also tabbed as the Coach of the Year for women for the 2005 season.

Andre Moore, Eric Palmer and Melik Noui were picked as first team All-SIAC tennis players, and Moore was named Player of the Year in the SIAC for men. Noui and Moore were also honored on the first team All-SIAC Academic Tennis Team. They both carry 4.0 grade point averages.

Jill Person and Sherell Carey earned first team All-SIAC, and Person was selected as the Player of the Year for women. Ebony Palmer earned first team All-SIAC on the women’s tennis academic squad.
