HBCU Connect and City Year Get Connected

Posted By: Jehan Bunch on August 14, 2008 Columbus, OH – Historically Black College and University mega site HBCUConnect.com is joining with the youth service organization City Year to heighten awareness through joint marketing initiatives of community service and leadership opportunities among Black college students and alumni. HBCUConnect.com members that log in to the Web site are immediately greeted by an advertisement urging them to “give a year. change the world.” The ad has been effective at creating interest in City Year, and generating contact information of HBCU students and alumni who are interested in learning more about the program,which unites 1,400 young people age 17-24 in full-time service as tutors, mentors, and role models who run after-school programs, lead youth leadership programs and work with community partners on transformative physical service projects such as reviving play spaces, planting gardens and painting murals. There are 18 City Year locations across the United States. “HBCU Connect is strongly committed to developing young leaders and empowering young people on their path to success,” said HBCU Connect President and CEO William Moss, III. “City Year shares this mission and our partnership only strengthens our ability to facilitate change and make young people realize that they can in fact change the world.” To further recognize the importance of service related organizations, HBCU Connect added a new employment category to the online Career Center called ‘Non Profit and Volunteer Services.’ This new category allows organizations like City Year to recruit HBCU Connect members to serve the community in both paid and volunteer opportunities. City Year was also recognized by Black Collegian (BG) magazine as a Top 100 Employer in February 2008. City Year was featured in the spring issue of HBCU ‘On Campus’ magazine, distributed by HBCU Connect on the campuses of all 105 Historically Black Colleges and Universities in the U.S. The article features City Year corps member Joel Donelan, who attended Howard University, one of the nation’s more preeminent HBCU’s.
