How involved should God be in your vote - your decision-making?

How involved should God be in your vote - your decision-making?
Posted By: Freya Sullivan Williams on August 29, 2008

Many think that God is a Republican or maybe even a Democrat. They are so loyal to their party's views that they can't even hear God during this election. God can use a Democrat or a Republican. Jesus was moral of course because He is the son of God, but on this earth He also had a social conscious. He had a balance. Why do party's have to be split along the moral and social lines. A real leader will have both.

Should your vote be based on a political party’s views? Let's blog about it. Check chapter 1 of Pray Before You Vote. www.praybeforeyouvote.org

I believe one must vote one's own convictions. Trying to draw moral equivalents in politics is a slippery slope. Our focus should never be what other people are thinking or doing. (I believe may people's beliefs are derived from other people rather than their own careful evaluation of the facts before them.) When you start talking about where God comes down on the political party line you are ultimately setting yourself up for some questions that you will be surprised to find that you do not have an intelligent answer for. God can speak for Himself. He doesn't need any assistance from me.

What I CAN do is stand by my convictions no matter how popular or unpopular.

Great comment! Your comment, “you believe that other people’s beliefs are derived from other people rather than their own careful evaluation of the facts before them” is just my point. Many have been so loyal to a political party that they dare not consider their “convictions” as you stated.

The question is where do your convictions come from? Since we study the word of God and He said seek Him for wisdom, then I would say our convictions come from the word of God. Jesus said to feed the poor, he who is without sin let him cast the first stone, live by the 10 commandments, so then where do our convictions come from?

Why are we afraid to bring God into our decision-making, especially the political arena? Jesus said the government will on His shoulders. We are ambassadors of Christ (2 Corinthians 5:20). Ambassadors are authorized representatives. We are not of this world, but we still have to live in this world and abide by the laws of the world, so why not vote our convictions which is the word of God. God gave us the ability to vote and we should vote our convictions. We have to see what is going on at this time in the world. What issues are prevalent at this hour more than before: poverty, racism, education which are all social issues. God is doing something miraculous during this election. His people are His voice whether we want to be or not especially since we are ambassadors of Christ. If this is not the case then why do we have preachers and teachers of the word?

Vote your conviction, whatever it maybe, but please vote. Keep the dialogue going. God bless!

Thank you once again. As we enter the arena of ideas we must consider that words have different meanings to different people especially people of faith. We get excited when we here that he or she is a "Christian" but we really don't know without investigation what the term means to them. Historically the term Christian was a derogatory term. Over the centuries it has come to mean something positive. As Stephen Covey admonishes in the Seven Habits of Highly Effective People first seek to understand, then to be understood. One thing is for certain: The Teachings of Jesus Christ are proven true more and more on a daily basis: You know a tree by the fruit it bears. This truth is never in question. It sounds to me like you're all about authentic Christianity in the most positive sense of the word.

When I studied law, I realized that all societal laws derived from the bible. I tested myself once on an exam I did not properly prepare for, but I used the "What would Jesus do?" philosophy approach. I scored an A on that exam.

When voting, or deciding to vote, I look at the candidates and try to apply that same principal with the best information I have about a candidate. I also believe that politics can be a verrry slippery arena and especially after a candidate gets into office and is influenced by lobbyist, etc. Likewise, a law student may graduate at the top of his class and become a crook in politics or the practice of law because of many outside variables.

Christianity can definitely take on a new meaning for any politician. Politically correct views can over-shadow Chrisitianity in that vein. Yes, we should each seek God's wisdom understanding, of course, that what one Christian understands can be quite different from another's understanding. That is why we must all read the scripture and pray for understanding individually.

Bob, I agree that words have different meanings to different people. That's what this part slippery as you stated. As Christians, we need to seek God in all of our decision-making and act on those decisions! We know that man was created in sin and he has a sinful nature by default. No one candidate will fully represent God, but we can pray for God's wisdom in our decision-making and once that person gets in office, we'll have to continue to pray. There are so many temptations and influences that we'll need to pray for our leaders 24/7. Our job as Christians is fulfill the great commission! We do that by spreading the word of God in its totality.

As we seek God during this election, let's pray that His will be done. The political strategists have their own marketing strategy to get the Christian vote, but because we have a spiritual and a natural responsibility, God will guide us if we seek His face.

Great dialogue!

Agnes, great points. The "what would Jesus do test", is a prime example of what I mean. You are so right, we can never go wrong when we follow Jesus. I do believe that when Jesus walked this earth He had a moral and social conscience. What I'm seeing is that the political party structure has split this in two. Republicans want to be the moral party and Democrats, the social party. I'm pray for the leader who was like Jesus, was concerned about both. We have to trust the Holy Spirit for guidance and wisdom. God can use anyone as long as they have accepted Jesus as their personal savior. The true test we have is to test their fruits to see if they are living out the word of God.

Thanks for the response.

I can say much here, great blog.
I am torn with my moral convictions verses party affiliation.
I receive emails and comments by people who are party conscious and ethnic conscious (I am a black man...)
People picked Saul in the Bible because God left it up to them and granted their wishes...
God made Moses a Judge and Moses appointed Judges on his own via advice from his well-meaning Father-N-Law Jethro.
Jesus did not void the laws of the lands he added Spiritual, because the scripture states Law kills, Spiritual loves. That is a social conscious to right and wrong.
By the way as an aside, I thought it was a brilliant move by Mccain to pick a woman for VP (Mrs. Sarah Palin).
Just giving credit where due, not picking party.
Thank you for the speak back.
Sincerely
William

William, thanks for the reply. These are great spiritual references! I agree with them all. David was chosen, but Jessie, his father wanted the others to be chosen. Just like today, we have to choose God's candidate not our own. God can use a Democrat or a Republican if they are saved. He can turn the hearts of the king. I'm not here to endorse or denounce a candidate, my prayer is that God's people will hear his voice and a stranger they will not follow.

God's spiritual law should override man's law, but we know that is the challenge for many Christians.

On my Wordpress blog, I said it was the best strategic move I've seen to pick the woman. It caught everyone off guard. I also point out that Hillary and Barack could have worked together in another post just as Barak and Deborah did in the book of Judges. Now, this is a brand new race. We'll have to pray and seek God before we vote!

Thanks for the dialogue. Remember to pray before you vote!

To the Black Hebrew children in the USA from Yahweh, "My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because thou hast rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee, that thou shalt be no priest to me: seeing thou hast forgotten the torah of thy Elohim, I also will forget thy children.
As they were multiplied, so they sinned against me: I will change their glory into shame.

Amen Brother Phil! The word is a powerful scripture and we need to be reminded to get back to God. When we get connected to God and allow the Holy Spirit to guide us, God will remember us. Our country is in turmoil today because we have pushed God out of schools, politics, marriages, finances, everything. When we get into a bind, then we want to call on him.

I was a basketball player most of my life. There are two sides, offense and defense. Offense mean that you have to be aggressive and go for what you know to win. Defense is when you have to protect your turf and stop the opponent. We have not been aggressive in our offense because we have been silent and allowed others to dictate how we should live without considering our voice.

Defensively, we have been weak as well. We have not defended God's word. We folks pass laws and we have to live with those laws. There is no prayer in school, the ten commandments can't be displayed and now politicians are trying to muzzle Christian leaders. It's time to speak up and get back to God. Great scripture reference!

It's time to get back to God. He created the 5-fold ministry to preach and teach His word.

Glory to his wisdom, knowledge and understanding not to our own.
Hypocritical clerics, politicians, journalists, and teachers pontificate their duplicitous guile for s*x, power and money. Their victims are fleeced unmercifully, pillaged ruthlessly, plundered and robbed to indulge the perpetrators' morose appetites. Religion and politics, journalism and academia, are dens of thieves. Together they weave errant and self-serving perceptions into a hideous and chaotic quilt, all aimed at distorting reality sufficiently so as to enrich and empower themselves.
Religious and political fraud isn't a victimless crime. Wars are fought and people die as a result. Even the tombs of the victims are plastered over and whitewashed to make it appear that they sacrificed their lives for something more noble then the unrestrained libido and greed of the self-indulgent. Truth is the first casualty. Deception is the only victor. Satan wins; we lose. It is our history; it is our destiny. It is our nature apart from God.

Phi I have to give credit where due, what you last wrote is deep, intriguing, knowledgeable and for me for lack of better words liberating. Further explaining, your paragraph adds substance and weight in an intellectual format more so then all the arguing, fighting and negative words thrown out there amongst people.
I wish more people could come together like this in a format that at least has a common base. I remember a Minister saying years ago that if there is no base there is no common ground, thus nothing to agree on which is futile.
Peace.

Mrs. Freya from my own experiences, I am not aware of other people working the way you are working. I also have to give you credit where due.
All through the Bible like in Proverbs the scriptures applies to what we see, but what we do as people...
I admire your stance. Part of what you do is take out of what is said in some Churches on Sunday and you activate throughout the week. People can talk about no seperation of Church and state, you are one of the few that shows it more than just words, even though we all have our parts we can play.
I find it interesting with King Saul and the bad and the good Kings that followed. When it was bad people prayed and someone was sent by God that people followed for a while and soon forgot.
What I see in scriptures is similar to presnt times, only difference is technology and time...

Good point William. Times are so similar. In my blog, should Hillary and Barack work together, found at www.praybeforeyouvote.wordpress.com, I likened the Hillary and Barack saga to the book of Judges. Barak and Deborah had to work together to defeat Jabin's army. Barack asked Deborah to take the lead. Deborah said yes, but if I do, it will be said that a woman did this. He said fine. My point is, if the Democratic Presidential hopefuls had worked together, the Republican polls would be different today. Now the Democrats have to come up with a new strategy. They need to try God's strategy. I believe that's been the missing link. (Just my opinion) Check out my post, The Obama needs God and Hillary to win on www.praybeforeyouvote.wordpress.com.

William, I agree that the difference today is technology. Technology has given us the ability to get our message to the masses in seconds. God is using technology to get His message to the people as well.

Be blessed!
