Young Entrepreneurs

Young Entrepreneurs
Posted By: Quentin Blanton on June 08, 2005

As a young black entrepreneur I really feel a sense of urgency for our black businesses to work together. As an alum of an HBCU, I truly learned the power that we have as a people. As I embark on this journey, I hope that I am able to give back to my community and patronize, as well as partner with, other black businesses in an effort to do like Magic Johnson says and "Keep it in the commmunity!" Often times our dollars get lost in other communities and never return. In no way am I saying to completely disregard the opportunities that may exist by venturing outside of the community, but do not overlook the opportunities that may exist within the community.

We need each other in order to grow financially in this economy as black businesses, and the best way to do it is to keep dollars circulating. If you own a real estate company, make an effort to use black developers, and black contractors. Believe me, there are plenty of them to choose from. We need to make our presence felt in the community, similar to that of individuals such as the late Maynard Jackson, Jr. who recognized the need for black city contracts, and created millions of dollars in the black business market. In short, use this and all of your resources wisely if you are interested in starting and running your own business. It is the best and most effective way to grow and give back. The white community has been doing this for years, and that is why it is so difficult for black businesses to reach fortune 500 status. Lets be wise and work together to leave the community better than we found it...Just food for thought!
