PRIME DIRECTIVE OF ONLINE SOCIAL NETWORKING

Joyce Irvin Harris, M.Div. on September 11, 2008 Though I am very new to social networking online, as a career U.S. Navy officer and an unashamed Star Trek aficionado (not to be confused with Trekkies, another species entirely), I am very familiar with General Orders. These are rules of conduct and engagement that supercede all others. The most important of these rules is called General Order 1, the Prime Directive. It is the most important law. Violation of this Directive is generally considered a felony offense that often carries severe punishment unless sufficient justification can be made for the violation. The PRIME DIRECTIVE OF ONLINE SOCIAL NETWORKING is best expressed in Luke 6:38, NIV... "Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you." Without doubt, networking is about discovering and fulfilling areas of need. Therefore, "[a]sk and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened. (Matthew 7:7-8, NIV) Yet to take without giving is selfish and robs us of the opportunity to be a blessing. If done consistently, we become branded as users, those who exploits others for personal gain. Such actions will soon make us personas non gratis since our reputation, whether good or bad, will precede us. So, as we go about our quest, let's not forget THE PRIME DIRECTIVE.
