Posted By: Eddie Francis on October 21, 2008 Southern University at New Orleans (SUNO) has named noted basketball coach Dale Valdery as head coach of the men’s basketball team. He replaces interim head coach James Rowley whose team ended the 2007-2008 season with a 5-20 record. “Building a championship program at SUNO is no longer a dream. The foundation has been put into place and it’s our job to build upon it,” says the highly seasoned coach. Valdery is best known for his success at Xavier University of Louisiana where he coached the men’s team from 1990 to 2002. During his tenure Valdery garnered a 234-136 record in 20 winning seasons, the most wins in the university’s history. In the process Valdery delivered three Gulf Coast Athletic Conference tournament championships and three National Association of Intercollegiate Athletic tournament appearances (1991, 1996 and 2001). He was also named the 2001 GCAC Coach of the Year and the 2001 Louisiana Small College Coach of the Year. Valdery holds a bachelor’s degree in physical education from Xavier. Valdery also experienced success in the NCAA as an assistant coach at Southern University and A&M College and Grambling State University. At Grambling he helped the Tigers to two Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) championships (1987 and 1988) as an assistant. When he served as an assistant with the Jaguars, Valdery helped deliver the 2003 SWAC championship. The Knights’ season opens on October 30th against Crichton College in Memphis, Tennessee.
