AN ODE TO RABBIT EARS...SO LONG MY WIRE FRIEND

AN ODE TO RABBIT EARS...SO LONG MY WIRE FRIEND
Posted By: MIISRAEL Bride on October 23, 2008

"Video killed the radio star!" Now the digital box has brought my rabbit ears to it's D -day. If you have a connection to rabbit years like l do, you'll be missing them too. As of February 2009, this great little invention of once a modern day television will be no more. Vanished away, it'll never work on televisions again. If you don't get the box, you'll be watching "white noise" forever.

I'm contemplating if I should place my "rabbit ears" in a little treasured box and keep for my next family of generations to come. I could leave a brief writing of how it worked in it's day. Of course, by then, there may be some newer invention. Never can tell, it may be a small micro-chip no bigger the head of a straight pen. It'll be a new age of television, far more advanced than DTV with some fancy modern future name. Forget that for now... I'm sharing "An Ode to Rabbit Ears."

Well, I'm sentimental. You may have all those fancy cable wires in your walls, and you haven't made a close friend with your rabbit ears. You may even laugh at me. Give my friend a decent goodbye.

Afterall, it's doom for my wire friend. I could decorate it with something, and keep it sitting on my dresser. I'm not throwing it away!

You're looking at history right in front of you. It's all passing away. I have memories of old days. Days our family sat and watched black and white televison, and old rabbit ears brought us a picture of fuzzy quality. We didn't mind. Our family sat together and watched Rawhide, Leave it to Beaver, and I would jump every time Rifleman, Chuck Conners would pull that fancy rifle out! Now, I don't have cable tv, and I can't even see those shows on TV LAND. It was my choice to get rid of cable tv, I've lived without it for several years now. Just pulled out the rabbit ears and that was enough.

I'll find some use for them. I may just place them on top of the "black box" and pretend they still work. Okay, let's salute the old menagerie-- it's days are numbered. February isn't that far away is it? Take your rabbit ears off your tv give them a proper goodbye. Say so long to my wire friend......Thanks to its inventor:
Marvin Middlemark.

LoL>>> Miisrael you aren't serious at all. Oh my those rabbit ears were the best. You forgot to mention the black and white shows of Mr. Ed The Talking Horse, The LongRanger, and what about Greenacres. Girl we are having to throw out the first RCA T.V. I bought after graduation from the university. You know the one before the flat screen kind came out. I don't like all this change. I want to keep my television, but the technology is outdated according to my husband. Uggggggh!

I agree with Mozell. The days of the rabbit ears might be over, but we are being introduced to new and improved problems like problems from weather...You can't bang on the TV to fix that issue or add aluminum foil to a cable wire. I will miss the rabit ears but it's time to move on I guess.

Love your blog. It certainly brought back memories for me. Do you remember the sheet that was sold, to give your black and white shows a little color? Blue at the top, green at the bottom and red, I think in between. Along with the rabbit ears that's my fondest memory; watching Bonanza (the first time around) in those 'glorious' colors. Thanks for the memories.

Thank you for your input everybody. Jen, I was actually serious, but I know it seems comical. I have attachment to many old things. I collect odd items. I understand moving on to newer things, but everything new is not always better or good for us. It's good to remember the old ways. Thanks ya'll.

Seems you are a curious one. I am aware it passes away, but deeply within me, someone must remember the "old ways" the ancient paths. New ways, are exciting and they too one day will pass away. Here is why I will remember in a bibical scripture: Jeremiah 6:16-17 (NIV) This is what the Lord says: "Stand at the crossroads and look: ask for the ancient paths, ask where the good way is, and walk in it, and you will find rest for your souls. But you said, "We will not walk in it." I appointed watchmen over you and you said, "We will not walk in it." "Listen to the sound of the trumpet!" But you said. "We will not listen." I find as ancient and old as things get. We must remember that the old ways are good, and new ways may not always be so. You understand now? Like you said "It is good to remember." Thanks you Asore.

I remember! Having to turn the dial by hand instead of remote control. My dad used to yell at us when we would turn the knob too fast. My kids don't understand, they've grown up with a remote control since birth! If I understand you right, Miisrael, it seems we get moving too fast, with all the technology, and so much is lost, not just the rabbit ears and old TVs. I remember hearing the planes break the sound barrier and make a big BOOM! There wasn't anything to be afraid of when playing in a pile of dirt at a local construction area, and pretending to cook with grandma's old pots and pans, making great culinary creations with dirt, plants, rocks and water. Seems like it's all disappearing, except for the memories. Thank you for this post. It brings truly dear memories back, that I don't even have photos of, to remember. Thank you!
