Life Goal Know How: Networking For Success

Posted By: Jessica Angelique on October 27, 2008 Life Goal Know How What are you trying to achieve? Perhaps you are trying to start your own business. Maybe, you have a new idea or invention or you may be trying to get your book published. A good idea must be followed by a good plan of action. Look at what it is that you want to achieve, and think about the best avenue or route to success. If you are like me, you are simply trying to get ahead. That can be difficult especially in today’s economic climate. When the economy started to take a turn for the worse, I sat down and re-evaluated my life goal list. Utilizing life goal know how means knowing when to reassess your situation and how to change your circumstances. If you know that things need to change, then change your attitude, and your situation, by changing course. Focus on your most important and immediate needs first. You may not want to let go of your current project or goal, but you may need to, if only for a little while. Change should be constant if you truly want to achieve your goals in life. Try not to become so fixated on what it is that you are working on. Flexibility is key to ultimately being successful. After reassessing your situation, you may find that other areas of your life are in need of immediate attention. Your focus should be on what you know must be done right now, not what you want to achieve ten years from now. I am not saying forget about those goals. I am saying that you need to set them aside for a while, until you can get things to where they need to be in your life. Each goal that you undertake should have an individual plan for success. For instance, if you need to find a job, and the networking sites that you currently belong to haven’t produced any viable job leads, then change the sites that you network on. One of my ten keys to success is "Don’t waste time and money on things and people that do not support goal achievement". If your goal is to be gainfully employed, and all that networking site has produced is a really good friend to chat with on Friday’s, then change what sites you spend your time on. When I join networking sites, I join with a purpose in mind. I am not looking for a date or somewhere to hang out on the weekends. I am there to network and find people or things that support my goal achievement. I reassess each site after 3-months. I give the sites a three month time limit because I know that it takes time to build your network. Finding truly good friends on the sites is a bonus, but it is not my end goal. If three months have come and gone, and I have nothing to show for how I spent that time, I leave. Take a good, long, hard look at what it is you need to achieve. If you feel that you are wasting your time, reassess where it is that you spend your time and what it is that you are spending your money on. Some sites charge a fee, but if the money that you are spending isn’t adding up to money in your bank, move on. Networking sites are great, if they allow you to showcase your goods or services. I am a visual learner, as are most people. We learn, buy, decide, and act based on what we can see with our eyes. We also take the time, if you are one of those people who does “due diligence”, to read and research the data and information that we see. If you are on a site that does not allow you to do that, and your life and business depends on advertising and networking with others who may not have know that you were out there, then change the sites that you network on and the people that you network with. Networking can lead to a great job offer, increased business opportunities, increased traffic to your website, and an increase in sales of your good or service. Networking, however, only works if you work it. It also works better and yields better results if you are allowed to advertise your business. Sites such as Connect Platform, Ning, and Yahoo360, are great for networking. They will allow you to start your own network or join one already in existence. You should also know that most of those, that have started successful networking sites by using the afore mentioned avenues, may or may not allow you to post personal information or advertise who you are and what you have to offer. If they don’t allow it, and you are just looking to connect with people who share the same interest only, then join away. Otherwise, join a site like Linkedin, which offers real networking with the people that you may truly need to be talking to. Getting ahead isn’t rocket science, but you do have to use your head in order to move forward. I am on various networking sites. Most, I use simply to stay connected with friends because the network administrator won’t allow me to advertise or post. I also have my serious, “It’s no joke when I log on” networking sites that have yielded serious connections to the people who I absolutely need to be connected to. I am an Author and for me, networking is my life. No one will buy your book unless they know who you are, what you stand for, and what it is that you have to offer them. The more people I know, the better it is for me all around. I also need to know those in the publishing industry, media industry, movie industry etc… and sites, like Linkedin, are a valuable commodity to me. It also helps to have a great home base website of your own that people can go to. For those of us on an “God, I seriously have no money to spend on a $8,000.00 website”, you can use Yahoo, which charges a scant $12.00 a month to host your site or Go Daddy, which is about the same. Your packages are actually all inclusive and include hosting, unlimited pages, an SSL Security Certificate, Shopping Cart, Forums, Blogs, Chat etc… If you have it to spend, then spend it. If you don’t, then just look like you do, and utilize Yahoo and Go Daddy. If you change the belief, you change the behavior. If you think about what is best for you and your family, then you are utilizing life goal know how. Think to achieve; and you will.
