The New York State Police is the statewide police agency of New York, with sworn members assigned to patrol, criminal investigation, traffic safety, and emergency response duties. Troopers work across the state and the force numbers in the thousands of sworn members, organized into troop commands that include a Troop NYC presence with its own recruiters in New York City. Entry is through the Trooper Entrance Examination, which candidates apply for online at joinstatepolice.ny.gov and then schedule at a testing center; minimum qualifications include U.S. citizenship, an age range of 20–34 with possible military extensions, and a high school diploma or equivalent, with college credits required by appointment.
