| Industry: Federal health care / public health
The Indian Health Service is an agency of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the principal federal health care provider for American Indian and Alaska Native people. It delivers primary care, dental, behavioral health, and preventive services to roughly 2.8 million people from 574 federally recognized Tribes through a network of hospitals, clinics, and health stations organized under 12 area offices, with facilities in both rural and urban settings across 37 states. Work is structured around three paths — federal civil service, U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps, and direct Tribal hire — and by law the agency applies Indian preference in hiring for vacancies, in addition to filling positions through standard federal competitive processes.
Types of talent they hire: physicians and physician assistants, nursing (including advanced practice and psychiatric nursing), pharmacy, dentistry and dental hygiene, behavioral health and social work (counselors, psychologists, psychiatrists, therapists), allied health and laboratory/medical imaging technology, environmental health and engineering (facilities planning, construction, safety and occupational health), and operational and administrative support such as contracting, finance, food service, and contact representatives.
