Under the supervision of the Serology/DNA Manager, the scientist will collect, examine, and analyze evidence by employing scientifically validated forensic DNA, chemical, biological, and serological testing methods. Incumbent will also evaluate analysis results and prepare a written opinion concerning the identification and comparability of blood and other body fluids and testify as an expert witness in a court of law.</p></span> <br> <br> <span id="MainContent_bold12" class="font-weight-bold">Overview: </span> <span id="MainContent_Overview"><br><br></span> <br> <span id="bold5" class="font-weight-bold">Duties: </span> <span id="MainContent_Duties"><br><br><ul><li>Accurately conducts forensic analysis/examination using forensically validated methods and reports results.</li><li>Maintains complete documentation of examination/analysis conducted.</li><li>Writes technical reports and opinions entailing the results from the examinations/analyses conducted.</li><li>Maintains a strict chain of custody and preserves the integrity of evidence in all cases.</li><li>Appears in court rendering expert testimony regarding scientifically valid procedures, results, and conclusions.</li><li>Participates in the proficiency testing program and training technical staff as needed.</li><li>Assists in implementing and maintaining the quality assurance and quality control program, as well as laboratory safety, ensuring the integrity of analytical testing and results.</li><li>Maintains and performs minor repairs on equipment.</li><li>Engages in continuing education and training programs.</li><li>Develops and implements new analytical procedures.</li><li>Where appropriate, conducts peer/technical and administrative reviews of Serology/DNA reports to ensure conformance to approved standards and the adequacy of the results for forensic purposes.</li><li>Plans, performs, and reports on the validation of new technology introduced into the section.</li><li>Develops protocols, procedures, quality control measures, and interpretational guidelines.</li><li>Performs other related duties as requested or required.</li></ul></span> <br> <span id="bold6" class="font-weight-bold">Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities </span> <span id="MainContent_KSA"><br><br></span> <span id="bold7" class="font-weight-bold">Knowledge of: </span> <span id="MainContent_Knowledgeof"><br><br><ul><li>Evidence handling, chain of custody, and courtroom procedures.</li><li>Quality management and accreditation in association with forensic laboratories.</li><li>Scientific methodology and general laboratory safety practices.</li></ul></span> <br> <span id="bold9" class="font-weight-bold">Skill in: </span> <span id="MainContent_Skills"><br><br><ul><li>Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.</li></ul></span> <br> <span id="bold8" class="font-weight-bold">Ability to: </span> <span id="MainContent_Abilityto"><br><br><ul><li>Successfully pass a color perception test.</li><li>Communicate effectively orally and in writing.</li><li>Maintain competency through performance evaluation and proficiency testing.</li><li>Approach problem-solving in a logical, unbiased, and methodical manner.</li><li>Analyze and interpret data and develop sound conclusions.</li><li>Analyze and solve technical problems.</li><li>Interpret, follow, and enforce written policies and procedures.</li><li>Maintain confidentiality and respect privacy issues.</li><li>Safely and securely handle evidence and maintain an accurate chain of custody.</li><li>Manage multiple tasks efficiently and work with frequent interruptions and changing priorities.</li><li>Work well in a team and independently, and meet deadlines set by internal and external entities.</li><li>Perform duties in the presence of biological or chemical hazards, toxic substances, bloodborne pathogens, and biological fluids.</li><li>Handle unpleasant odors associated with a death-related environment.</li><li>Bend, stoop, kneel, reach, push, and pull.</li><li>Sit or stand for prolonged periods of time.</li><li>Participate in an intensive training program in order to develop competence in prescribed laboratory procedures.</li></ul></span> <br> <span id="bold10" class="font-weight-bold">Residency: </span> <span id="MainContent_Residency">Allegheny County within 1 year.</span> <br> <span id="bold11" class=" font-weight-bold">Veterans' Preference: </span> <span id="MainContent_VeteransPreference">Will be awarded to eligible candidates.</span> <br> <div id="Needtocenterandbold" class=" text-md-center font-weight-bold"> AN EQUAL OPPORTUNITY EMPLOYER - M/F/V/D </div> <br> <br> <div id="Needtocenterandbold2" class=" text-md-center font-weight-bold"> <a href="https://apps.alleghenycounty.us/HRJobApplication/firstpage.aspx?id=2850" id="MainContent_Applyonline">Apply Online</a> </div> </div> <br> <br> <br> </div>
