The State of Connecticut, Department, Department of Correction (DOC) Unified School District #1 is seeking an enthusiastic and experienced Coding Instructor to teach programming fundamentals and practical coding skills in the role of State School Teacher.

We're looking for candidates who are familiar with JavaScript and modern web development technologies such as Node.js, React, Express, MongoDB, Mongoose, and API testing. If you’ve worked with these tools and are eager to grow your skills further, we’d love to hear from you!

This recruitment may be used to fill openings in correctional facilities across the state. We encourage Coding educators who are interested in becoming a State School Teacher with the DOC to apply directly to this recruitment.

POSITION HIGHLIGHTS

SCHEDULE: first-shift, full time (35 hours per week,) Monday through Friday
LOCATION: Osborn Correctional Institution (Somers, CT)
NOTE: Unified School District (USD) #1 follows a 12-month school calendar.
TRAINING: Candidates selected for hire, are required to attend a fourteen (14) week training at the CT DOC Training Academy. More details can be found in the 'Selection Plan' of this job bulletin.
Candidates new to the State of Connecticut will start on ‘Step one’ of the pay plan, in the tier that their highest level of education corresponds to. Salary details derived from the P-3B T1-T4 35 Hour Pay Plan are outlined below:

It has its headquarters in Wethersfield. YOUR ROLE

The Connecticut Department of Correction Unified School District #1 is dedicated to providing quality educational programs for incarcerated individuals. Academic knowledge, vocational competencies and life skills integrated with technology are offered to students in a positive environment to foster lifelong learning, multicultural awareness and a successful transition to society.

As a State School Teacher with the DOC, you will be responsible for:

Prioritizing safety and security as it pertains to staff, victims, citizens, and offenders;
Teaching early intervention, elementary, secondary, special subject, and/or special education curricula;
Developing educational plans for individuals and groups;
Setting short and long term goals and evaluating student progress;
Participating in planning team meetings and case review conferences to assess student behavior;
Holding conferences with parents or officials concerned with student performance;
Relating to professionals in ancillary educational roles;
Maintaining student records and writing reports;
Modeling positive teaching practices.

An understanding of the different types of learning styles of students and being able to teach to their ability levels.

Working knowledge of classroom routines and disciplines.

Qualifications & Requirements
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Possession of a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university or college.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Experience with teaching a diverse group of people.
Experience working in a correctional institution setting.
Experience teaching groups of people with differing levels of education.
Experience teaching Web Development Fundamentals, such as HTML, CSS, JavaScript, jQuery, and Bootstrap.
Experience teaching MERN Development, such as Node.js, React, Express, MongoDB and Mongoose, and API Testing.
One or more of the following State of CT teaching Endorsements:
o 110 Unique Subject Area – Computer Science
o 047 Technology Education, PK-12
o 107 External Diploma Program/Noncredit Mandated Programs
