Job Description

Purpose: Data Science and Analytics is an ambitious team of Data Scientists and Data Engineers with a unique blend of Business, Scientific, and Machine Learning expertise that seeks to unleash the full potential of AbbVies data assets by bringing technology and/or data and insights to the forefront of decision making via fit-for-purpose solutions.

The Associate Director role in Data Science and Analytics is a leadership role and is responsible for strategy, talent management and operations delivery. Identifies new capabilities and opportunities to drive analytics innovation and value creation. Fosters a culture of experimentation to enable data-driven insights for complex business problems. Influences cross-functional leaders to unleash the full potential of data and advanced analytics techniques like Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence.

The Associate Director, Real World Data Strategy & Utilization leads the sourcing, acquisition, management, and strategic utilization of RWD for use in Data Science and Analytics products and projects. This role partners with product owners and data science experts to ensure seamless integration of RWD to enhance advanced analytical insights and drive meaningful improvements to patient outcomes.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Manages the acquisition of RWD including strategic sourcing, vendor quality assessment, ongoing access, cost/benefit assessment, competitive landscape assessment, and contract management.
  • Partners closely with cross-functional stakeholders (including Product, Engineering, Clinical, and Compliance teams) to ensure ongoing data usability and reliability.
  • Designs analytical data store solutions to streamline access and usability, thereby maximize value realization and minimizing costs to scale.
  • Drive the integration of RWD with existing enterprise data sources (biomarker/translational, big data, digital sources, pharmacovigilance data, clinical trial data) to uncover unique, combined insights
  • Responsible for people management including managing line-level people managers
  • Responsible for coaching, mentoring and performance management of direct reports. Responsible for talent development in alignment with R&D business needs
  • Influences the cross-functional stakeholders at Director level to identify opportunities to unleash the full-potential of data and analytics, including advanced ML techniques and Artificial Intelligence.
  • Represents the functional area at critical governance, quality and compliance, and regulatory meetings
  • Ensures consistent analytics support through effective resource management, prioritization, and timeline management.
  • Fosters innovation and entrepreneurial culture within the team that attracts and retains top talent; Creates an environment of continuous learning
  • Ensures adherence to federal regulations and applicable local regulations, Good Clinical Practices (GCPs), ICH Guidelines, AbbVie Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and to functional quality standards. Stays abreast of new and/or evolving local regulations, guidelines and policies related to clinical development

Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree statistics, analytics, bioinformatics, data science or equivalent field. Masters degree preferred
  • Must have 6-8+ years of experience with enabling novel analytics capabilities by leveraging RWD in clinical/pharmacological applications across business areas with 3-4 years of experience leading a team or cross functional initiative
  • Intermediate proficiency with visualization tools like Spotfire, PowerBI, or equivalent
  • Prior ownership of a data contract in a large organization preferred
  • Demonstrated ability to set strategy for novel data utilization preferred
  • Intermediate-level proficiency in R, Python or other statistical packages. Intermediate-level knowledge of statistical and data mining techniques *Can this be preferred, not required?
  • Demonstrated project management skills
  • Experience with Machine Learning and other advanced analytics techniques preferred
  • Demonstrated effective communication skills. Demonstrated ability to communicate analytical and technical concepts in laymans terms
  • Demonstrated problem-solving and analytical skills
  • Demonstrated history of successful execution in a fast-paced environment and in managing multiple priorities effectively
  • Demonstrated ability to influence cross-functional leaders at Director level
  • Good understanding of clinical development functional areas and related processes is preferred
  • Proven track-record with leading complex cross-functional initiatives
