Roscoe Nance was born Dec. 8, 1948 in Enterprise, Ala., the youngest of Y.C. and Ruth Nance’s three children. In 1950, he moved with his family to Union Springs, Ala., where he graduated from Carver High School in 1967 and still maintains ties to the community.
Mr. Nance graduated from Tuskegee (Ala.) Institute in May of 1971 with major in Political Science and a minor in English. He was a member of the Reserve Officer Training Corps Program and was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the United States Army upon graduation. He was also a member of the marching band in addition to serving as sports editor for The Campus Digest, the student newspaper. From 1971-74 Mr. Nance was a platoon leader in the United States Army at Fort Benning, Ga., where he supervised training for a 44-man infantry platoon for its combat mission before he was honorably discharged. Mr. Nance was a sports reporter for The Enquirer newspaper in Columbus, Ga., from July 1975-September 1978, covering athletic events of 14 local high schools, Auburn University, the University of Alabama, Georgia Tech, Albany State, Tuskegee University and the Atlanta Hawks, Braves and Falcons. From September 1978-January 1985 Mr. Nance was a sports reporter/columnist for The Clarion-Ledger newspaper in Jackson, Miss. He covered athletic activities of Jackson State University, Alcorn State University, Mississippi Valley State, University, Mississippi College, Millsaps College, Delta State University, the University of Southern Mississippi and Belhaven College and wrote general interest columns. His assignments included covering the Alcorn State men’s basketball team’s historic upset victory against Mississippi State in the 1979 National Invitation Tournament (NIT), the game in which Walter Payton broke Jim Brown’s NFL career rushing record and the 1984 Mississippi Valley State vs. Alcorn State football game, which attracted the largest crowd (63,808) ever to watch a football game in the state of Mississippi. Mr. Nance was a reporter for USA TODAY in McLean, Va., January 1986-December 2007 He covered the NBA from 1994-2007. His Assignments included 13 NBA All-Star Games, 12 NBA Finals, the 2000 Olympics and the 1992 Olympics, the 1988 Pan Am Games. From 1986-1994 Mr. Nance covered college sports and soccer. His assignments included six Sugar Bowls, two Finals Fours, the College World Series, the NCAA Division II football and basketball Championships and the NCAA Division IAA and Division III football championships, the 1992 Olympics, the 1994 World Cup, 1990 World Cup Soccer Qualifying matches, the inaugural Women’s Soccer World Championship in China in 1991 when he was the only reporter from an American daily newspaper covering the event., and the 1988 Pan Am Games. Mr. Nance is currently an independent sports journalist, writing stories for the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference and Southwestern Athletic Conference websites;, BlackAmericaWeb.com, Black, College Sports Page, BoxToRow.com, FultonSports.com Mr. Nance’s current and past activities include: Chair, Tuskegee University National Athletic Association (TUNAA); Executive Board Member, Tuskegee National Alumni Association (TNAA); Tuskegee University President’s Eminent Associates donor, established the Charles E. Boddie Memorial Band Scholarship at Tuskegee University; Chair, Black College Football Hall of Fame Selection Committee; President, founding member, SWAC Alumni Association; past member, Board of Directors, Bullock County (Ala.) Partners In Education Foundation (PIE); past volunteer, Big Brothers & Big Sisters of Jackson, Miss.; past member, Advisory Board, Union Springs-Bullock County (Ala.) YMCA; Board Member, Y.C. Nance Memorial Sports Foundation, Union Springs, Ala.; past member Pro Basketball Writers Association; past member National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) ; past member Selection Committee for National Football Foundation Hall of Fame (Division IAA), charter member, Omicron Kappa Kappa Chapter, Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc.; life member Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., assistant basketball coach, Chantilly (Va.) Youth Association. Mr. Nance is married to Willye Mae Pinkard Nance. He is the father of two daughters, Riva and Rahkia Nance, and a son, Ronald Keith Evans, who is married to Monica Bowers Evans. He has two grandsons, Eric and Christopher Evans, and a granddaughter, Alexis Evans. Mr. Nance is a member of First Missionary Baptist Church, Vienna, Va., where he is staff writer for The Epistle, the church’s monthly newsletter. |
