Q&A With Barbie Ann Matthews

What was the impetus to become a cyberpreneur?
" I was motivated to become a cyberpreneur, way back when we commonly used the term – “The Information Super Highway” for the Internet. I've been increasing my Entrepreneurial momentum ever since. I love to read and I love to write. I started by creating a newsletter entitled “The Original Gothic Business News” A newsletter of ideas and information for small businesses. It was devoted to bringing the latest ideas and how-to advice on starting, managing and marketing a small business of your own. It was dated November/December 1985. I purchased my first computer from Radio Shack and it was the Tandy brand with an operating system called Windows XT, not XP. Windows XT didn’t really have a Graphical User Interface; however since I did most of my typing on a typewriter, the Tandy seemed like a big step up for me. However that was back then and of course I have modernized my home office with the latest and greatest technology within reason that is. I actually took a course called WIBO – Workshop in Business Opportunities. This course was a great start and I also attended a Seminar on how to create a newsletter. All in All to keep this condensed. I would have to say that the World Wide Web of today has made my dream of working from home a reality…and I don’t intend to look back…I am very flexible so I go with the flow. If I needed to step back into the vintage time zone…I would definitely use a typewriter all over again. I took typewriting in High School and enjoyed it very much…I had no clue as what the future would hold. As of now I am interested in having multiple streams of income…I love fitness which is probably the reason why I became a nurse back in the day. So I am currently preparing to take a Personal Training, Nutrition course and more to achieve some of my goals. I just want to say to those who I have serviced I would like to thank you very much for putting your trust in me and my services. I pride myself with being on top of the most up to date articles and information in addition to much more. So stay tuned! As far as your health it is never too late to take the initial step towards a healthier life! You’re only as old as you feel and I feel like I’m not a day over (not telling ya)! I’m pretty sure you will feel ready to stay and or feel young again too! Love, Barbie Ann "

Most Memorable Moment:
Extraordinary Lesson Learned – It is humbling, gratifying and edifying the years that I spent in college that my most significant experiences involved something compassionate and significant! Just know that, if you find yourself contemplating your goals and getting something noteworthy accomplished or trying to wrap your head around something outrageous or presumptuous, just remember that the body follows where the mind goes, and the actions of an optimistic, compassionate person can play a major role in healing the world. There are wonderful discoveries out there waiting for you. And they’ll enrich you for life. In my College nursing discipline I studied and performed many skills that have become part of my daily routine. These skills were performed properly, safely, timely, and thoroughly documented. Many days as a Nurse I felt short on help, short on rest, and short on time! However, I formed a therapeutic bond with my patients as I ventured to be prudent! I knew at that time that I had made the right decision to become a nurse. I recognized the great importance of becoming a nurse that sees the patient as a Holistic being, not just parts, and a person who provides quality care to the body, the mind, and the spirit. It could be important to recall your own experiences if you have ever been a patient, and to remember the reservations and anxiety that can accompany hospitalization. I truly believe that, “as a compassionate nurse that I played a major role in healing the patient.” My expectation was that by speaking to my patient and showing genuine concern that maybe I made just a small difference in their philosophy on life. I always felt that smiling, making eye contact and thanking my patients for allowing me to play a pivotal part in their medical care was essential to their whole body healing that could last for a lifetime. I always appreciated “When a patient would say, ‘You made me feel better’ or assisted them in the smallest way…those were the patients that made my day! A simple ‘acknowledgement’ goes a long way for making me feel valued! “Finding a high-quality nurse is not just about checking off a list of skills the nurse can perform; it’s also about finding somebody who is an excellent fit for the patient.” – Barbie Ann Some notable courses amongst many that made an enduring impact on me: Developmental psychology-I learned about the scientific study of how and why human beings change over the course of their lives. The course covers infants, children, adolescence, adult development, aging and the entire lifespan. This examines change across a broad range of topics including: motor skills, cognitive development, executive functions, moral understanding, language acquisition, social change, personality, emotional development, self-concept and identity formation. Developmental psychology examines the influences of nature and nurture on the process of human development, and processes of change in context and across time. An important aspect might include the interaction between personal characteristics, the individual’s behavior and environmental factors, including social context and the built environment which would include human-made surrounding that provide the setting for human activity, ranging in scale from buildings and parks or green space to neighborhoods and cities that can often include their supporting infrastructures, such as water supply or energy networks. “Our ability to adapt is amazing as through others we become ourselves” – Barbie Ann Matthews Speech- The field of speech communications is concerned with the methods associated with verbal and non-verbal communication. The specific subject area of speech falls under the umbrella of general communications studies. I developed an affinity for words and language. It was not a major, however I felt that in speech communications, that I could enhance my curriculum, and use the skill across a wide range of academic professions. I realized that with my course in speech communications that I could go on to work in business, advertising, journalism or the arts within either the public or private sectors. The common factor for me was to develop valuable speech skills. I was a little nervous when I made my first speech, however a college classmate told me that my speech was very good, he then told me that I only needed to slow down the pace a bit. True to form I did have to write and make speeches at times in the workforce. “What cannot be said above all must not be silenced but written.” ― Jacques Derrida Sociology- is an academic and applied discipline that studies society and human social interaction. Sociological research ranges from the analysis of short contacts between anonymous individuals on the street to the study of global social processes. The main focus is on how and why people are organized in society, either as individuals or as members of associations, groups, and institutions. As an academic discipline, sociology is typically considered a social science. Sociology also studies social status and the social structures of society, social change, social movements, and the breakdown of society through crime and revolution. I was very passionate about my sociology course in that I learned how individuals live in and are affected by society. The ultimate goal is to advance human understanding of how to establish a world of tranquility. An interesting perk for me and my fellow classmates, was that our Sociology Professor only gave open book exams!!! “The Seven Social Offenses are: Wealth with no work; Pleasure devoid of conscience; Knowledge lacking character; Commerce without morality; Science missing humanity; Worship without sacrifice; Politics free of principle; - Barbie Ann Queenborough at times would have some musical artists come to the auditorium and Carl Carlton was a very notable artist that I enjoyed. He sang a song called She’s A Bad Mama Jama. He began his career in the mid-1960s as "Little Carl" Carlton. This was a marketing strategy to take advantage of some vocal similarities to Stevie Wonder, who recorded under the name "Little Stevie Wonder" in the early 1960s. A Haywood-penned single, "She's A Bad Mama Jama (She's Built, She's Stacked)", became a major hit, peaking at #2 on the soul chart and earning Carlton a Grammy Award nomination for Best R&B Vocal Performance, Male in 1982."She's a Bad Mama Jama" has since become a staple of compilation albums and soundtracks and is often sampled in rap music. Classic, absolutely energizing; in my opinion, this song is the best "I'm jogging through the neighborhood, I'm trying to liven up, and I need to get my stroll on" kind of song you could have on your mp3 player. “Don't think or judge, just listen and enjoy.” - Barbie Ann Matthews
