My name is Thomareen Goba I’m currently enrolled at Virginia Union University. I am a second semester Junior as a full time undergraduate student majoring in Interdisciplinary Studies/Elementary Education. I chose to attend a HBCU because my first college tour was at Howard University and just seeing the love and support from the teachers, staff, faculty as well as students helping each other out gained my attention. Also I saw a television program that included some of the HBCUs. The students were enthusiastic about their schools, involved in a lot of activities and seemed to truly be enjoying their college experience. I saw active fraternities and sororities, talent shows, athletic games, concerts and a lot of school spirit I just fell in love with everything. Then I began some extensive research on HBCUs. Researching HBCU I found out that most of the civil rights leaders attended HBCUs as well as my close church family. During my senior year of high school I apply to all HBCUs and got accepted to all. After some advice and wise decision-making, I chose Virginia Union University. I couldn’t be happier with my decision. I enjoy the family atmosphere, traditional values, academic excellence and loads of opportunities. I have never been surrounded by such a diverse group of students who are serious about their education. Attending a HBCU will help me meet my future goals in life personally and professionally because it has exposed me to the good the bad and the ugly which is a great thing because that’s how the real world is. Going to an HBCU is helping me meet people that I never thought I will meet for example the mayor of Virginia which was a great experience. Also the network is great because all HBCUs help each other out and the networking is great HBCU also have a lot of Internships and Jobs opportunity. Upholding a 2.5 GPA but striving for a 4.0 GPA. My goal is to pursue a career in the field of Education. This goal has been a part of my plans since my early teen years. Most of my volunteer experience has involved mentoring children. To know that I can make a positive impact on a child’s life is rewarding to me. As an undergraduate I am dedicating my best efforts towards my education. Plans after I receive my Bachelor’s Degree will be to attend the University of Georgia where I will complete my Master’s Degree as well as Doctoral Degree to become not only a teacher but a person that will make a difference in children’s lives all around the world. Being that I was born in Monrovia Liberia which is located in West Africa my biggest dream is to build Elementary School for children that do not have the opportunity to go and get an education. I do believe that Education is the key and the kids are our future.

Sincerely,
Thomareen Goba
