Brief BIO

Dr. Tyson Beale is a passionate administrator who has 15 years of experience in K-12 and higher education. He currently serves as Associate Dean of University College at Fayetteville State University. Prior to his appointment at FSU, Beale worked as a district administrator for Baltimore City Public Schools. He has held leadership roles for TRIO’s Student Support Services, Multi-Cultural Services, and Student Affairs. His leadership experience has focused heavily on increasing the retention and degree completion of college students, particularly young men. During his tenure at Morgan State University, he founded Male~Strategy, co-founded the “Board of Advisement Recruitment and Retention” (B.A.A.R.), and mentored men of the Morgan “Male Initiative on Leadership & Excellence” (MILE) while working in the Office of Student Retention and Leadership Development. His work earned him the honor of 2007 “Male Faculty/Staff Member of the Year at Morgan State University. As Associate Dean, Beale supervises the Freshmen Center and multiple Learning Center teams. The centers are a collective of services that include university seminar courses and learning communities, academic advisement, supplemental instruction, literacy and math support. His research interest is African American male persistence and first and second year programs. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree and MBA from Radford University in southern Virginia and Ph.D. from Morgan State University.

Highlights: • Since arriving to Fayetteville State University Dr. Beale has streamlined first-year supplemental instruction, math and writing center supports and best practices. Recognizing that student retention in the first two years is the hallmark to graduation rates Beale has worked hard with coordinators to reform and advance strategies and operational plans. • To date Beale is helping to organize and develop an aggressive, yet substantive approach to undergird higher need subgroups on campus. Dr. Beale led a leadership campaign for students who required additional academic supports during their initial semester. • September 9th launched the inaugural University College week on campus. UC leadership has worked to partner with numerous service areas and resourceful advocates on campus to expose students early to the many resources available on campus. • Professional development opportunities have increased for advisors and student employees. PD has been inclusive of Noel-Levitz, National Tutor Association, and transitional studies components to name some. According to Beale, PD is everyone’s business and a collaborative approach to knowledge building. • UC has a new partnership with the newly established Office of Student Retention on campus aimed to advance retention, graduation rates, and best practices.
