About   (request update)
Keisha L Bentley-Edwards, PhD

Dr. Keisha L. Bentley-Edwards is an Assistant Professor of Educational Psychology and a Faculty Affiliate in the African And African Diaspora Studies Department at the University of Texas at Austin. Growing up in Southern California she witnessed too many friends lost to gangs and failing in school. Dr. Bentley-Edwards always felt that people gave up on them before they reached their full potential.
While earning her Bachelor’s degree at Howard University, Dr. Bentley-Edwards learned about the many researchers and practitioners that were dedicated to improving the lives of youth at risk for academic failure. This led her to study resiliency at Teacher’s College, Columbia University. Dr. Bentley-Edwards then worked at a small private university where she directed several initiatives targeting Black and first generation student persistence, faculty of color retention and the evaluation of academic diversity objectives. Her personal and work experiences invigorated her desire to improve youth outcomes. She was particularly disappointed with the way that underperforming Black students were often dismissed as a lost cause, and it was assumed that Black college students no longer needed support. She decided that she needed more training to gain an understanding of the processes by which young people understand their cultural selves and how this meaning making influences relationships, academic achievement, well-being and a sense of social responsibility. She received this training while earning her PhD in Applied Psychology & Human Development from the University of Pennsylvania.
Dr. Bentley-Edwards has created assessments and published findings on the unique experiences of Black girls and boys, racial/ethnic socialization, community investment and racism stress coping. Her work also examines the racial socialization of White children and how these messages influence their healthy or maladaptive relationships with their Black counterparts in school. She strongly believes that research should be used as a tool to actively inform practice and policies that address the challenges facing the Black community.
She is happily married to Dr. Malik Edwards, a professor of law at North Carolina Central University. If you are looking for either of them, try an airport.
