About   (request update)
Dr. Shakeria Cohen is a native of Spartanburg, SC, where she attended Spartanburg County public schools. Among the many subjects she enjoyed, Dr. Cohen’s absolute favorite subject was science, which led to her enrolling in the Biology program at the University of South Carolina. While attending the university she was selected as one of the first Ronald E. McNair Undergraduate scholars. The federally funded program was designed to prepare students for doctoral programs through involvement in various secondary data analysis research and other scholarly activities. The research program exposed Dr. Cohen to numerous health careers which sparked her interest to pursue a doctoral degree. She received her Bachelor of Science in Biology in 2001 and decided to enter the work field before returning to school. Dr. Cohen worked in corporate for several years before accepting a position with the American Red Cross as a Lead Laboratory Technologist. In this role she assumed many critical responsibilities including; managing and monitoring the quality control (QC) of blood products distributed to healthcare facilities for transfusions, operating and/maintaining QC of all equipment and supervising lab technicians. Although Dr. Cohen enjoyed her experience with the American Red Cross, she still felt that she hadn't reached her full potential. She began researching graduate programs that would combine her passion for biology and medicine. The doctoral program at Morehouse School of Medicine was a perfect fit for Dr. Cohen. The institution was small and the staff was very supportive. Also Dr. Cohen shared the mission of the institution to improve the overall health and well-being of underserved communities. Dr. Cohen resigned from her position with the American Red Cross in July 2012 and entered the graduate program at Morehouse, in August 2012. Dr. Cohen’s research focused on an array of cellular, molecular, biochemical, genetic, and morphological approaches aimed at understanding the role of mitochondrial genome variants in the development of ovarian cancer. The medical impact of her research included introducing a novel diagnostic tool to be used in conjunction with established tests for early detection of ovarian tumors. Dr. Cohen excelled while attending Morehouse. She held many leadership roles and received numerous awards and recognitions. Dr. Cohen served on the executive board of the Graduate Student Association as vice president, parliamentarian and student liaison. Dr. Cohen also served as vice president of membership for the Biomed Talkers Toastmasters Club. In this role she was responsible for chairing the membership committee and ensuring the retention of members through planning, organizing and directing programs focused on the growth of the club. Among her many awards and accomplishments, she was named NIH MBRS-RISE Fellow, Frontiers in Cancer Research Travel Awardee, Frontiers in Stem Cells Travel Awardee, Janssen R&D Scientist Mentoring Scholar and International Center for Professional Development - Scientist Mentoring & Diversity Program (SMDP) Scholar. In addition to all her many achievements, Dr. Cohen has two publications in scientific peer review journals. As a doctoral student, Dr. Cohen had the opportunity to perform research that could eventually help improve healthcare outcomes. The findings improved her understanding of cancer which would enable her to offer solutions on cures and improved treatments. Currently, Dr. Cohen is seeking career opportunities in cancer research.
