Claim To Fame:
My “claim to fame” in college is being a first-generation student who continues to pursue his dream despite the barriers placed in front of him. Attending Morehouse College, nearly 650 miles away from home, has challenged me in many ways. I have faced obstacles, made mistakes, and felt moments where giving up seemed easier than continuing. However, my ambitions are not something I am willing to part with easily. As a first-generation college student, I understand that my journey is not only about me. I want to become an access point for my family and community, showing others that their dreams and ambitions are valid too. Growing up underrepresented and with limited resources can sometimes make success feel distant or impossible. I have felt those doubts before, but I refuse to let them define my future. Instead, I choose to use my background as motivation. My goal is to use my education, growth, and future success to create opportunities for others who come from communities like mine. I want my story to remind people that unfavorable circumstances do not have to limit their potential. My claim to fame is my resolve: I will not simply back down, and I will continue working to become a catalyst for those who come after me.
Most Memorable Moment:
My most memorable college moment was winning first place in Morehouse College’s President’s Hackathon this past spring. Before the event, I almost convinced myself not to participate because I doubted my own skills and questioned whether I had anything valuable to contribute. However, by the end of the 36-hour weekend competition, hearing my team’s name called as the first-place winners became one of the most motivating moments of my college experience. The hackathon taught me more than I expected. It expanded my understanding of the possibilities of artificial intelligence, the importance of having a strong team, and the value of different roles within a project. While one of my teammates developed the original idea for our technology solution, I found my place as a supporter, creative thinker, and co-leader. I listened closely, helped connect different parts of the idea, challenged weak points in our thinking, and contributed suggestions when the team felt stuck. What made the experience so meaningful was that I learned leadership is not always about being the loudest voice or having the first idea. Sometimes leadership means helping others think more clearly, supporting the vision, and making sure the team continues moving forward. Winning the hackathon gave me confidence in my abilities and reminded me that I belong in spaces where innovation, teamwork, and creativity are taking place.
