Claim To Fame:
I always had an interest in the wealth of the community. I wonder what I could do to make a difference. So I started a Theater group association in college with the purpose of bring message using role-plays. I was the president of the Millennium Artist association of the Metropolitan University. I wrote a play called “Mis Dias de juventud” that means my young days, that involves different issues around teenagers and young adults. We did the play at college and it was a complete success. It was a great feeling to do something for the community and know that you are creating differences. Currently, I am funding college by Pell grant and work. I had two jobs and study at the same time. It is hard but I wish I could get this scholarship.
Most Memorable Moment:
I became a Sunday teacher at church. I was involve in a lot of activities like the youth association “Jovenes con Pasión” (youth with passion) this association works with the community helping them with their needs and teaching them the word of God. We use mime to send messages to the communities. I also did a voluntary work for a Public elementary school helping kids with disabilities and teaching them. In the professional area, on my second year of college I apply for an internship. I was elected to be one of the 20 students elected around the college and universities of the island of Puerto Rico to be in the Cordova Congressional Internship in Washington, DC. I had the opportunity to work in the House of Representatives. I was working with Texas 27th district Congressman Solomon Ortiz. I got a wonderful experience involved with different issues about politics and law. Another internship I did was the Hispanic Association of College and Universities internship in the spring 2003. I was working for the CDC for the Division of HIV/AIDS prevention. When I was working in the CDC I conducted a project that challenges my knowledge and abilities. At the mean time when I was working at CDC I gain knowledge in public health and mature professionally in different aspects. I had the opportunity to experience and create something that I didn’t know how to do it. But I never surrender and I try until I did it. I create a guide for the review and assess curricula and a guide to identify the essential components of cultural competency in HIV prevention and intervention programs for the Latino community.
