He is the last of the DCTAG Program’s original staff members and has been with the office since the program’s operational start in February 2000. In that role, Ken was the architect of the DCTAG Informational blitz that resulted in the staff’s participation in over 800 workshops and trade shows throughout this area and in other states. He personally participated in over 600 of these sessions extolling the virtues of this program. The Mayor even acknowledged his contributions by recognizing him as one of the District Government’s recipients of the Customer Service Excellence Awards for 2003. He has been the programs Operations Manager since 2006. He also served as the only non-financial management member of the Planning Team for the District’s newest financial aid program, the D.C. College Savings Plan. He was honored in 2004 by the DC College Access Program (DCCAP) as the “Washington, D.C. Counselor of the Year”
If that were not enough, we found that Ken was frequently called upon to give general financial aid advice. Believe me, he is uniquely qualified to give such guidance because he is the Former Director of Financial Aid at the University of the District of Columbia. He did the job so well that he was selected as the first recipient of the Presidential Outstanding Staff Member Award at the University. He also served as the Director of Financial Aid at Washington Technical Institute and D.C. Teachers College, as well as being the Deputy Director of Financial Aid at Federal City College. All three were predecessor institutions of the University of D.C. Ken retired from the University after 30 years of service.
Within the financial aid profession, we must take note that he twice served as the DC Representative to the Delaware-District of Columbia-Maryland Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators. He also was the President of that Association. In addition, he received the Association’s Annual Outstanding Service Award. Ken has written numerous articles for financial aid publications around the country. He has served as a national financial aid trainer for the US Department of Education, given countless workshops, and conducted informational sessions for district and federal agencies, area community and national organizations around the country, including the NAACP in Durham, North Carolina.
He also served on the Advisory Board of The United Negro College Fund’s Standards of Excellence Peer Review Project. He has also done several radio and television financial aid presentations in Washington, Baltimore and Prince Georges County and also been featured in a recent Washington Post Sunday Magazine Story, the Smithsonian Magazine and the HBCU Connect.Com Magazine. If that is not enough, he is a Licensed Professional Counselor. Needless to say, he is an individual who not only has played an instrumental role in the expenditure of over $500 million for the DCTAG Program but also continues to assist students and parents make educational dreams a viable reality.
