Louchrisa Ford High was educated in the public schools of Georgetown, South Carolina and graduated with honors from Howard High School. She attended Atlanta University and South Carolina State University where she majored in music education with piano and clarinet as her major instruments. She graduated with the highest average in her class in l963.
Dr. High obtained the Master of Science degree in music (1972) and a doctorate degree in Educational Administration and Supervision (1988) from Tennessee State University. She received a national award from Phi Delta Kappa for her doctoral dissertation entitled, “A History of Black Music and Biographies of Selected Black Composers.” She also obtained an Associate Degree in Computer Science with concentration in Internet Web Design from Draughons College in 2009.

In 1984, Dr. High was evaluated by the Tennessee State Department Education and was successful in achieving the Career Ladder for Excellence in Teaching. In 1992, she was selected as an “Outstanding Woman in Nashville.” In 1993, she was the recipient of the Metropolitan Nashville Education Association’s Ted Martin Human Relations Award for being a dedicated teacher and humanitarian. In 1994, she was the overall winner of NewsChannel 5’s Golden Apple Teacher of the Year. Dr. High received the Colonel Aide de Camp recognition from the Governor of Tennessee for being honored as an Educator of Excellence. She won the Mayor’s Acts of Excellence Award for the musical, Watanza, which she composed. In 1996, she was selected as Tennessee’s Teacher of the Year by the Tennessee Association of Middle Schools. She also won the prestigious National Council of Negro Women’s Excellence in Teaching, which was sponsored by the Shell Oil Company. In 2013, she received the National Association of Negro Musicians’ Heritage Music Award. She has won numerous competitive awards for choral performances on the regional, national and local levels..
She taught at Tennessee State University for 25 years in the areas of Statistics, Research, Multicultural Education, and Advanced Math for Teachers. She retired from the Metropolitan Nashville Public school System in 2005, after 45 years of teaching vocal and general music, and she has been a music educator for 52 years. Currently, she serves as Professor of Music at Motlow College in Smyrna, Tennessee.
She has participated in scores of workshops, educational research projects and has also written numerous books to address issues related to helping students be successful in school. Some of the books written include a Guidance program for At-Risk Students, Sasha: Respecting Diversity, Wonders of Education, Math Eurhythmics: Learning Math through Music, Improving your Child’s Academic Performance: A Guide for Latino Parents. She presented workshops on “Strategies for Teaching Music in the Humanities” for 30 Guatemalan educators who were visiting the United States to study the educational system. She has done research in the areas of Instrumental Enrichment, History of Black Music, Learning Styles, and Improvement of Memory and Reading Skills.
She is affiliated with professional organizations and is a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. She is also a Big Brother, Big Sister Volunteer.

Dr. Louchrisa Ford High was selected by the National Association of Negro Musicians, Inc. as the 2013 recipient of the Heritage Music Award for outstanding music education leadership and for making a significant contribution to the African American music community. Founded in 1919, the National Association of Negro Musicians is the oldest professional music organization dedicated to the preservation of African American music.
