I was born in 1964 in Baltimore, Maryland to Richard T. Adams Jr. and Judith C. Adams. I graduated from the Baltimore Polytechnic Institute (Senior High School) in 1981 and matriculated to Howard University. I am a Distinguished Military Graduate of Howard University, graduating in 1986 with a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry and an active duty commission in the United States Army (second lieutenant of the Armor Branch). Upon completion of the Armor Officer Basic Course (Cavalry), Fort Knox, Kentucky in September of 1986, I reported to Headquarters, 2nd Battalion, 37th Armored Regiment, 1st Infantry Division (Forward), Panzer Kaserne, Boeblingen, Federal Republic of Germany. I was assigned to Company D where I was a Tank Platoon Leader. The unit was later reflagged as the 3rd Battalion, 34th Armored Regiment where I was assigned to Company C as the senior Tank Platoon Leader. In 1989 I was assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 3rd Battalion, 34th Armored Regiment as the Company Executive Officer. Upon completion of my overseas tour, I reported to the Armor Officer Advanced Course, Fort Knox, Kentucky in 1990. After completion of the Armor Officer Advanced Course and the Cavalry Leaders Course, I reported to Headquarters, 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment (Rear), Fort Bliss, Texas. In January 1991 I reported to Regimental Headquarters and Headquarters Troop, 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment, Saudi Arabia. I was assigned to the Regimental Staff as the Deputy Regimental Logistics Officer. In November of 1991, I was reassigned to 3rd Squadron, 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment as the Deputy Squadron Operations Officer. After a successful tour of duty with the 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment, I accepted a position at the installation level as the Deputy Training Officer, Central Tasking Office, Directorate of Plans, Training, Mobilization, and Security, United States Air Defense Artillery Center and School, Fort Bliss, Texas. In March of 1995 I was released from active duty with an Honorable Discharge. Following a successful military career of more than eight years, I began my second career as an insurance agent. I received my Texas Group I insurance license (Life and Health) and my New Mexico non-resident insurance license in 1995. In addition, I earned my NASD securities licenses (Series 6 and 63). I was an agent with Minnesota Life, AXA Equitable, Colonial Life and Accident, Aflac, and Humana. My areas of expertise include the following: life insurance (term, whole life, variable adjustable life, universal life, and index universal life), disability insurance (individual and group), health insurance (individual and group), annuities (fixed, index, and variable), mutual funds, retirement planning, college funding, voluntary employee benefits (accident insurance, hospital indemnity insurance, cancer insurance, and group life insurance), Medicare health plans, Medicare supplements, and Medicare Part D prescription drug plans. In February of 2013 I became a Benefits Advisor with the Office of Transition, Employment, and Economic Impact, US Department of Veterans Affairs, Fort Bliss, Texas. I conduct VA benefits briefings and career technical training track workshops for transitioning service members, veterans, family members, survivors, and demobilizing service members in the US Army Reserve and the Army National Guard. I have personally briefed more than 4000 members of the Armed Forces. I have resided in El Paso for 25 years. I am a duly initiated member of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. (Theta Delta Lambda Chapter, Fall 1993) and the Pi Rho Sigma Military Fraternity, Inc. (Alpha Cohort, December 2014). I am currently the National Treasurer of the Pi Rho Sigma Military Fraternity, Inc. I am married to the former Krystal M. Nixon of University Park, Illinois (Spelman '87). I have two sons, Ryan O. Adams Jr. (age 23) and Christopher Myles Adams (age 18).
