What motivates You?

Why did you start writing poetry?
"It started out as a therapeutic thing since I was the only black male working in my department at Bell Labs for years. But then I began using it as an ice-breaker at numerous Career Day presentations at schools. Eventually a number of people started asking for copies of them. I am who I and am and say what's on my mind. Some folks don't like it but I don't care. Others thank me for saying what they wanted to say but couldn't. Some folks call me "Trouble" because of this and I'm going to write a book about it one day. But I have to call it like I see it. It's just in me to do so. My mother was like that but she had a lot of friends. I guess all of this comes with the territory of being smart. You know how to say too smart for your britches. Well that's me. Peace I gotta go cause I'm at work.

Veteran of US Air Force and former basketball star prior to going to college. Married with two children. Appointed Poet Laureate of Irvington N.J. in 2003. Appointed to Irvington Planning Board. Block association president for over 10 years. Elected Democratic District leader for fourteen years in a row. Published six books of poetry.
