Biography

Dr. Jerrod A. Henderson is a faculty member in the Department of Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering at the University of Illinois. He is a well sought after public/motivational speaker who has a passion for mentoring college-aged, high school and elementary school students. He was most recently recognized by the Bruce D. Nesbitt African American Cultural Center as the “2013 Most Supportive Faculty Member.”

He studied at Morehouse College and North Carolina Agricultural & Technical State (NC A&T) University where he earned degrees in Chemistry & Chemical Engineering respectively. During his tenure at both Morehouse and NC A&T he was a Ronald E. McNair Scholar which afforded him the opportunity to intern at NASA Langley. He has also earned distinction as a NASA Harriet G. Jenkins Graduate Fellow, University of Illinois SURGE Fellow, Phi Beta Kappa (Delta of Georgia), and an American Chemical Society Scholar.

Dr. Henderson’s main teaching responsibility is Chemical Engineering Unit Operations, a senior capstone course. In this course, Dr. Henderson has developed inquiry-based teaching modules for senior undergraduate students that emphasize safety, team-building, communication, ethics, and professionalism. Dr. Henderson has previously served as an education outreach coordinator for the Center for Nanoscale Chemical-Electrical-Mechanical Manufacturing Systems. Here he helped develop nanotechnology-based education modules.

His research interests are in S.T.E.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics) Education and the accessibility of S.T.E.M. to under-represented populations. Dr. Henderson has 7 years of youth development experience, collaborating with community youth programs such as the Don Moyer Boys and Girls Club where he founded the Benjamin Banneker Science Program, Franklin Middle School, and Booker T. Washington Elementary School where he is the co-founder of a science academy for fathers/mentors and their 4th and 5th grade sons.
