Why did you choose to attend an HBCU?
HBCUs are still very relevant today because most of them combines the academic strengths of a major university with the benefits of a small college, a combination that enables majorly African American students to grow and learn in a serene and positive environment. At Grambling State University Classes are offered for more than 300 to 800 courses and between 47 to 190 degree programs in several colleges, including an honors college, professional schools, graduate school, and Division of Continuing Education. National and local employers recruit graduates from GSU’s excellent nursing, engineering, technology, sciences, education, and other choice programs. My HBCU plays a very important and significant role of giving young black potential people who without this opportunity might not have has the unique opportunity of gaining college education however they are also relevant, considering the level of discrimination and racial barriers black people in Predominately White Institutions have to endure, tolerate and surpass in their quest for academic achievement and success.
In addition, my experience at my HBCU like most HBCUs has been terrific and outstanding so far; being one of the country’s top producers of African American graduates and the top producer of Computer Information Science grads in Louisiana, Grambling is the home of the internationally renowned Tiger Marching Band and the “winningest” coach in college football, the legendary football coach Eddie Robinson, Sr., whose tenure is memorialized in a campus museum, funded and operated by the state of Louisiana. Steeped in history, with a longstanding tradition of excellence, HBCU Universities continues to emphasize the value and importance of each student, exemplified by our motto in Grambling: Where Everybody Is Somebody. I therefore cannot over emphasis the relevance and importance of my HBCUs
How will attending the HBCU you chose help you meet your future goals in life personally and professionally?
My personal motivation derives from a series of events after my mother was diagnosed with breast cancer. Although I was only seven years old and did not understand the severity of the situation, I often accompanied her to for chemotherapy, and I vividly remember her taking several kinds of medication to help relieve the pain. After two years the situation became dire and she died. I realized her helplessness and was saddened when the doctors dispassionately told her that they could only provide medications that would help ease the pain until she passed. This inspired a burning desire in me to study Bio-Engineering and technology with special emphasis on medical/health engineering and computer informatics because I wanted to better understand how to prevent, manage, and perhaps cure cancer in the future, hence I am committed to not only achieving a bachelor’s degree in this area of specialization but a Ph.D. I therefore have decided to dedicate my entire life to making a difference in the lives of others, in order to help ease the physical and emotional sufferings patients and their families undergo. I vowed to myself to direct my anger into positive energy, by contributing to scientific discoveries that will bring about a meaningful change and ultimately help eradicate this pandemic that ravages and torments families around the world.
Upon my successful completion of the bio-engineering and bio-fuels research program at the Colorado Centre for Bio-refining and Fuels at The University of Colorado Boulder, I received a certificate of research excellence organized by The National Science Foundation in Collaboration with the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, the program covered a variety of topics to include; biochemical and thermochemical conversion, life cycle assessment and economic viability. This intense engineering program triggered my interest in cardiovascular science and medicine; as a result I intend pursuing a Ph.D. in this relevant area of biomedical/bio-engineering that will provide me with the necessary specialized research knowledge required in the use of cutting edge technology and it will also prepare me to make a significant contribution in the fight against cancer.
As a dual major in computer information systems and bio-engineering Technology student at Grambling State University, I have been taught tactical, systematic and strategic hands on approach to produce scientifically correct solutions to technical problems. I believe these practical problem solving skills will in no time give me a tremendous advantage and leverage.
Moreover, as a result of my participation in several computer science, research and technology related internships, I have gained meaningful experience as a team player, developed good oral communication skills. In addition I also learned how to compose competent reports in order to solve technical problems. I follow instructions well, and I can also work independently with little or no supervision.
Furthermore, if awarded this scholarship, it will allow me concentrate more of my effort and time in my academics as oppose to constantly worrying about pressing academically inclined financial obligations. Nevertheless, I constantly seek the opportunity to participate in medical/computer and technological research programs that would provide me with a platform for gaining additional knowledge and increase my capacity to utilize specialized world class research facilities and tools. In conclusion, my long term professional goals is to make a substantial amount of difference that contributes towards the scientific and technological advancement of both computer informatics research and bio-engineering. In this way, I anticipate that by investing in my dreams, we can collectively help preserve and enhance lives and ultimately make the world a healthier, safer and better place for all by tenaciously increasing the fight against cancer. All I ask, is the opportunity to serve, impact the world and ultimately make a difference.
