Most Memorable Moment:
One of my most memorable moments took place in 2008 when President Obama won the election. On the eve of the election, news stations were broadcasting the results live. At the time, I was serving as Chief of Staff for the Student Government Association at Claflin University. I was in the SGA office preparing last-minute details for an upcoming event when, out of nowhere, I heard the loudest outcry across campus. The sound echoed not only throughout Claflin University, but also across our neighboring HBCU, South Carolina State University. It felt as if the entire city of Orangeburg was rejoicing. In that moment, we had just elected the first African American President of the United States. I left the office and walked into the student center, then out onto the plaza in front of the building. Instead of immediately celebrating, I chose to pause and listen. It was a beautiful sound. You could hear joy everywhere. Hundreds of students and members of the Orangeburg community were praising God, hugging one another, and celebrating history in the making. It remains one of the proudest and most memorable moments of my college experience. In the weeks and months leading up to the election, my fellow SGA members and I worked tirelessly to educate students about the importance of voting and civic engagement. Hearing those voices that night meant everything. It was more than celebration. It was affirmation that our efforts mattered and that we had played a small part in a historic moment.
