In the following essay, I will be discussing my reasons for attending an HBCU and how the HBCU that I have chosen will help me meet my future goals in life personally and professionally.
The reason that I chose to attend an HBCU is because it was important to me to be able to feel nurtured and regarded as an important individual. Being a Charlotte native; I felt that I would be able to receive this type of treatment at JCSU. The important factor that motivated me to attend an HBCU is because one of my sisters in Christ attended JCSU and she graduated after persevering through many hardships, trials and tribulations. She is a mother of a total of eight children whom all have the same father who left them while they were all very young. After their divorce she had to raise her children and provide for the household. She worked very hard and decided to go back to school and she really inspired me to do the same. She is the reason why I am attending an HBCU at JCSU and I can’t wait to celebrate my graduation along with her.
Attending Johnson C. Smith University will help me to reach my goals personally and professionally because I plan to create a platform that will allow me to elevate, educate, motivate and help to promote progression among other African American students financially, emotionally, economically and socially. I believe that with my degree of higher education, I owe it to my fellow brethren to give back by educating others and further promoting others to pay it forward to pave a better way for the generations behind us. I want to leave a legacy of love and a blueprint for others to follow that they can also add to and blaze the trial for future generations to follow. We must help one another do better. What good is it to have degrees yet only help ourselves. Collectively, we can change ourselves and communities but we must first have ‘the will to do it.’
