Cadence Handy is a vibrant and motivated student, studying Marketing at Howard University. She has several years of hands-on experience in customer service, fashion retail and small business operations. She has developed strong skills in problem-solving, teamwork and leadership in her roles at Cava, Free People and Libby's Lids. Cadence has demonstrated herself as a leader as varsity volleyball co-captain, active member of Girls Inc. and Student Ambassador. Dedicated to service she also volunteers at Murphy's Giving Market to support families in her community. She is eager to continue broadening her skills and exploring opportunities in finance, marketing and business industries.

Current Whereabouts:

I am into Economics, Marketing, and Fashion. I am interested in environmentally ethical clothing brands that use natural fabrics and support our environment. I am also interested in traveling to learn and understand how other cultures live. I love all kinds of music, including Gospel, 90's R&B, Jazz, KPop, Rock and more.

Life & Professional Aspirations:

I aspire to work in the fashion industry in the earliest parts of my career. I don't want to sew or make fashion. I want to examine and analyze trends and drive brand recognition for a company that is socially and culturally responsible. At some point, I would like to also work with private clients, particularly Black people, to help with wealth management to bring financial empowerment to communities of people who look like me.

Claim To Fame:

The semester just started a few weeks ago for my first year, so I am still establishing my place at Howard. However, I am eager to jump right in and I am currently running for Treasurer for my Freshman Class in the School of Business. Elections start soon, but I plan to win based on my integrity, intelligence and willingness to lead. I have been learning the skill of small talk, which is sometimes hard for my generation. I am excited that I am meeting new people who come from all over the United States and beyond. Already, friends are telling me that I know a lot of people because I practice small talk by just saying, "Hello" to others and asking questions to get to know them. I hope my friendly, welcoming nature combined with my leadership development become my "claim to fame" in college.

Most Memorable Moment:

So far, my most memorable college moment from the past few weeks was when my Aunt, an alumna, got to pin me at our Pinning Ceremony. It was such an emotional moment for both of us. There were lingering hugs and tears of joy as she welcomed me into an institution unlike any other. We both stood there on the same grounds that she had walked several decades before. It was extraordinary and I'll never forget it. I knew that attending Howard would prove to be some of the most impactful years of my life.
