Throughout my career as a "caregiver" and in working with customers at Kilwins and Raising Cane’s, I was able to build on many of the skills I believe are important to success such as effective communication, team-based work ethic, time management, patience and responsibility. Additionally, volunteering at the local food bank and participating in other events at my church has allowed me to demonstrate an ability to follow instructions, be reliable and help those less fortunate than myself.
Current Whereabouts:
I like many things outside of school. Some are skincare, perfume collecting, reading, housecleaning, wellness routines for maintaining balance in life, and routines for confidence that allow me to be at peace with who I am. I enjoy sweet scents (especially warm ones), drinking matcha, Pilates, and looking for romance in day-to-day activities while continuing to grow as an individual to become the person I want to be. In addition to being confident and personally fulfilled, I believe it is important to have positive relationships and communities around me; therefore, I strive to create a life that is both peaceful and successful so that I can meet my long-term goals.
Life & Professional Aspirations:
I am committed to pursuing a healthcare profession that will enable me to have an impact on those populations that need it most. I want to be a psychiatrist because of my desire to apply what I know about nutrition, physical wellness and mental health to provide individuals with the tools they need to lead better lives. In addition to making contributions through my work as a psychiatrist, I also wish to establish a life based upon balance, faith, personal development and service to my community; and continue to inspire others by demonstrating how to overcome adversity and achieve success through leadership and compassion.
The majority of my first year has been about developing myself, persevering, and learning what it means to be passionate about something. The first semester of college was the beginning of my journey as a first-year Nutritional Science Pre-Med at an HBCU. I went back and forth from trying to adjust to the demands of college classes and keeping up with work and my other personal commitments. In contrast to many people my age, I did not focus primarily on getting recognized or popular; instead I concentrated on creating a solid base for the future I envision. I actually did not initially think I wanted to go into Nutritional Science. When I first applied to Howard I thought I was going to major in Biology because I assumed it was the normal way to enter medical school. However, after studying nutrition, I realized there were so many aspects of healthcare beyond treatment alone. The aspect of nutrition really exposed me to an entirely new world of healthcare that I was unaware existed. Nutrition allowed me to see that health encompasses far more than just curing illnesses; it includes prevention, education, mental health, lifestyle and all of the socio-economic factors that impact large groups of individuals. Throughout my coursework, I became more and more intrigued by the connection between nutrition and preventing chronic diseases and managing mental health issues specifically among underprivileged populations. Realizing how much nutrition can influence an individual’s overall physical and mental health helped me recognize the importance of providing culturally sensitive preventive care. Recognizing this importance furthered my resolve to seek out a career in psychiatry and community health advocacy. If I could say anything about my "claim to fame," I'd say it's my determination and quiet consistency in everything I do. I consistently show up regardless of whether things get tough. While I don't consider my first year to be marked by numerous titles or campus-wide recognition, it prepared me to grow into someone more confident, driven, and goal-oriented than ever before. I've learned that success does not always equate to visibility. Instead, success often comes as a result of our ability to endure challenges, persevere, and remain committed to attaining our objectives no matter who sees us doing it. My first year provided me with the clear vision, motivation, and a greater sense of purpose.
Most Memorable Moment:
The most vivid memory of my collegiate experience thus far has been delivering my first formal presentation as part of my Nutrition Through The Life Cycle class on the association between Celiac Disease & ADHD. While this might seem like an unremarkable occurrence to some, it represented something profoundly greater than that to me both personally and academically. This marked the first occasion in which I presented myself in a more professional and serious way for class by dressing appropriately. Before this experience, my classes did not involve presentations or business attire. So, when I walked into class wearing professional attire, the experience felt authentic from a completely new angle. This was the first occasion in which I felt that I was no longer merely "attending college," but actively working towards my career in healthcare. In addition, what made the experience deeper was the confidence I felt during the delivery of the presentation. My group and I researched how Celiac Disease can affect nutrient absorption, cognitive function, and look like ADHD symptoms. During research, I grew very passionate about researching and studying this subject. Speaking to my peers in front of the classroom about the topics I studied over many hours enhanced my realization of how much knowledge I acquired throughout my first year. I felt well-prepared, capable, and confident enough to share information with others regarding a subject that they may not have known about. That presentation changed my outlook on college and my future. It allowed me to see that events similar to this are not small or inconsequential; they are foundational experiences that foster confidence, professionalism and direction. It also taught me that each project; assignment; presentation; etc; regardless of how significant it seems is preparing me for my future career in healthcare. Moreover, it reminded me to appreciate the growth and successes I achieve rather than continually focusing on how much further I need to go to achieve my goal. Looking back at that experience, it will remain a vivid memory for me, not because I spoke in front of a classroom full of people; but because it was the first time that I truly saw myself becoming the type of healthcare professional that I strive to become.
