Morehouse College class of 2028
Undergrad Major: Aerospace Engineering
Claim To Fame:
If I had to identify my "claim to fame" in college, it would be my passion for aerospace engineering. At Morehouse College, engineering is not the center of campus culture. We do not have a traditional engineering program, and very few students spend their free time talking about propulsion systems, rockets, or aircraft design. Because of that, people often remember me as "the rocket guy." What surprises people most is that aerospace engineering is not just something I study in the classroom, but it's how I often choose to spend my time outside of it. I build and launch novice rockets using solid rocket motors, teach myself new engineering concepts, and use CAD software to design drone components. I fly drones with friends, stay up to date on developments in the aerospace industry, and actively seek opportunities to connect with engineers, researchers, and professors in academia. Even casual conversations often turn into discussions about space exploration, aviation, or whatever project I'm currently working on. What began as a childhood fascination has grown into a defining part of my identity. My curiosity pushes me to go beyond what is required of me academically and seek hands-on experiences that bring engineering concepts to life. It has also taught me the value of initiative. Since Morehouse does not offer the same engineering infrastructure as larger technical institutions, I have learned to create opportunities for myself rather than wait for them to appear. I think that is why this passion has become my claim to fame. It is not simply that I want to become an aerospace engineer, but it is that the people around me can see how deeply invested I am in that goal. Whether I am launching rockets, designing parts, networking with professionals, or encouraging other students to explore STEM, I bring the same enthusiasm and curiosity to everything I do. Long after people forget my major or my résumé, I hope they remember me as the person who was relentlessly passionate about aerospace and inspired others to pursue their own interests with the same level of commitment.
Most Memorable Moment:
My most memorable college moment actually took place before I had officially started college. On July 28, 2024, I attended the SpelHouse Class of 2028 DMV Sendoff. It was one of the first opportunities, outside of admitted students weekend, for me to meet other students who would soon become my classmates. I arrived feeling extremely nervous. Aside from a friend from my high school's robotics team who came with me because he was interested in attending Morehouse the year after me, I did not know who would be there. As soon as we walked into the room, I recognized someone I had stood next to during Morehouse's admitted students weekend back in April. My friend and I introduced ourselves, and before long, our small group of three had grown into a circle of nine young men laughing, sharing stories, and enjoying each other's company. What made that moment so special was how effortless it felt. Before then, I had never formed connections with people so quickly. I had always been somewhat reserved when meeting new people, so discovering that I could instantly feel comfortable and accepted by complete strangers was both surprising and reassuring. At the time, I had no idea how important those relationships would become. The nine of us entered college together, navigated the challenges of freshman year side by side, celebrated each other's successes, and supported one another through difficult moments. They became much more than classmates. They became my brothers. I had also had the chance to meet some of my sisters from Spelman college during that event aswell. One of my brohters that I had met that day invited my freind and I to the harbour to hang out with him and some of the Spelmanites he had met that day. I really enjoyed my time spent with them as we shared stories and laughed to the point where we almost got kicked out of the chipotle we were eating at. I remember my friend's parents called him and told him that we had to head home before it got dark and neither of us wanted to leave. Those kinds of memories are the ones I had hoped to have in college and I believe it is special that I had the chance to experience that before I had stepped foot on campus. While I am proud of the opportunities and successes I have experienced in college, nothing compares to the day I unknowingly met some of the people I trust most in this world. That sendoff taught me that one of the greatest gifts of college is not just the education you receive, but the people you grow alongside. Before classes had even begun, Morehouse had already given me something I never expected. A lifelong brotherhood.
