As a first-year Political Science major at Spelman College, I have developed leadership, communication, and organizational skills through academic, volunteer, and campus involvement. I served as a volunteer for Judge Penny Brown Reynolds' Georgia Secretary of State campaign, where I assisted with voter outreach and community engagement. On campus, I am a member of the Spelhouse Pre-Law Society and serve as Publicity Chair for the Chinese Culture Club. I have experience creating social media content, coordinating events, and leading projects. My achievements include maintaining a strong academic record, earning scholarships, and demonstrating a commitment to public service, leadership, and advocacy.
One of the most memorable experiences of my first year at Spelman College was running for First-Year Student Council Vice President. Entering college, I never imagined that I would stand before hundreds of students in the historic Sisters Chapel and deliver a campaign speech. Public speaking had always been one of my greatest fears, but I decided to challenge myself by stepping outside of my comfort zone and pursuing a leadership position.
The campaign required far more work than I initially expected. I spent countless hours creating flyers, designing social media content, and sharing my vision with my classmates. Every conversation, post, and event was an opportunity to connect with others and encourage them to participate in student leadership. Through the process, I learned the importance of organization, communication, and perseverance.
The most rewarding part of the campaign was the people I met along the way. I connected with like-minded students who were passionate about making a difference on campus, and I received valuable advice and encouragement from upperclassmen who had gone through similar experiences. Their guidance helped me navigate the challenges of campaigning and reminded me that leadership is about service and community.
Although standing in Sisters Chapel to give my speech was intimidating, it became a defining moment in my college journey. I proved to myself that I was capable of overcoming fear and speaking confidently in front of an audience. More importantly, I built meaningful relationships, gained confidence in my leadership abilities, and became more engaged in the Spelman community.
My campaign for First-Year Student Council Vice President is my "claim to fame" because it represents growth, courage, and connection. It was an experience that pushed me beyond my limits, introduced me to incredible people, and helped shape the confident and involved student I am today.
Most Memorable Moment:
My most memorable moment in college was attending Founder's Day at Spelman College. As a first-year student, I had heard about the significance of this annual tradition, but experiencing it in person was truly unforgettable. Founder's Day gave me a deeper appreciation for Spelman's rich history, its mission, and the generations of women who have walked the same path before me.
One of the most inspiring parts of the ceremony was hearing from the distinguished Spelman alumnae who were honored and awarded honorary doctorates. Their speeches were powerful and uplifting. They shared stories of perseverance, leadership, and service that demonstrated how a Spelman education can empower women to make meaningful contributions to their communities and the world. Listening to their journeys encouraged me to dream bigger and reminded me that success is achieved through hard work, resilience, and a commitment to helping others.
Another highlight of the event was the performance by the Spelman Glee Club. Their voices filled the auditorium with beautiful, soul-stirring music that captured the spirit and traditions of the College. The songs were more than performances; they were expressions of pride, unity, and sisterhood. As I listened, I felt connected not only to my classmates but also to the generations of Spelman women who came before us.
Perhaps the most meaningful aspect of Founder's Day was learning more about the lives of Spelman's founders and the sacrifices they made to create educational opportunities for Black women. Their vision and determination transformed countless lives, including my own. Understanding this history gave me an even greater sense of responsibility to make the most of my education and contribute positively to society.
What made the experience especially personal was knowing that my grandmother attended Spelman College 64 years ago. As I participated in the same traditions and celebrated the same values she experienced as a student, I felt a profound connection to my family's legacy. It was incredible to realize that we shared a bond through Spelman that spans generations. In that moment, I understood that I was not only honoring the College's history but also continuing a family tradition of excellence, perseverance, and leadership.
Founder's Day was more than a ceremony; it was a transformative experience that deepened my appreciation for Spelman College and strengthened my sense of purpose. It reminded me why I chose Spelman and inspired me to carry forward the legacy of those who came before me. For these reasons, attending Founder's Day remains my most memorable college moment.
