I am a mixed, Black American woman who was raised by a single white mother, and while without her I would never be the person I am today, there are just some things she could not help me with. When a little girl fails to see those traits reflected in the shows meant to help her grow up, she begins to notice.

What I am thankful for now is what I see on screen now. I look on social media and see other women who look like me with their hair large and curly. They taught me how to take care of it, and motivated me to no longer burn my hair with a straightener every day.

Nowadays, I can turn on a TV show or movie and see strong, confident black women staring back at me. I hope to work on shows and movies like the ones I grew up with, and be the inspiration I was given far too late in my life.
